I like Maya and am looking forward to Maya 2012. But based on what I’ve seen, it is still going to be lacking a lot of the modeling and mental ray improvements that many have been anxiously awaiting. I think it would be great if the next release of Maya could be known throughout history as the “Modeling and mental ray Integration” release.

i would be a good move if they do update the modeling tools to be similar to that of max

Indeed modeling tool aren’t maya’s forte. Proper symetry and more advanced tool to deformed and edit model.

As much as I would like nucleus to grow into something bigger and replace/update more modules in Maya. I would much rather see Modelling and Rendering updates for sure. I consider these areas the bread and butter of almost every project, geometry is almost always needed, and everything needs rendering. I enjoy Maya’s marking menu approach, and enjoy using it as a modelling tool, unfortunately it is missing some more advanced tools, and overall feels a bit buggy. Mental ray looks dated compared to Vray2 these days, so it would be great to some some major improvements to Mental ray. I’m 100% for keeping Maya 2013 focuced to these two areas, as long as the improvements are substantial.

I think that mentalray plugin should be integrated more effeciently, right now the translation takes huge time with complex scenes, and once a render starts the whole system becomes inactive, the ESC key doesn’t help, many times I have to kill maya process in the Task Manager,
the Finalgather gives nice renders but it’s a high ressource demanding.
I wish Maya 2013 be entirely reviewed towards effeciency, stability, and seamlessly intergrated within existing OS and crtified for midrange graphics hardware (I found not supporting last few years video card NV X700;X500 and Geforce not very comprehensive).
For cleaver modeling tools Maya Mel will take the challenge.

Wow - what happened to this poll?
Yesterday the “Don’t care. Autodesk just do what you think is best.” option had zero votes, and now it has 127 votes. To date, this poll only has 130 total views. That is less than the total vote count for all the options.
Who messed it up?

it’s the problem with the forums website. users can double post by refreshing their browser over and over and rack up votes (like the posts nromally do). the POLLS are USELESS due to this… but POLLS are useless even if they are working. : )

Autodesk stop BEAT AROUND THE BUSH, put ICE in Maya ( more procedural, more powelfull). The base of modeling is a like every program, mental ray is the slowest of others. Why Don’t you exchange for renderman???? good solution for problems on render.

I have been using Maya since its first release and am still using it so don’t take this the wrong way but XSI with ICE seems to be a very powerful 3D animation package, and Mental Ray is properly integrated with it too. Why not take the Maya interface, including Marking Menus, Maya terminology etc.. and add it to XSI? It would be interesting to see what the Maya users do. Maya and XSI appear to be conceptually quite similar, I don’t think it would be that hard to make the change, I’ve always liked the Maya interface but have been frustrated with its poor node system and buggy tools and I’ve been reluctant to convert to XSI given the amount of Maya production facilities out there and the appearance that XSI is not being developed as a flagship animation package by Autodesk.

Licensing cost of adding renderman would either double the cost of maya, or lower the functionality of renderman significantly. Also there is a vast portion of maya users who only know how to use physcially-based renderers and would be unable to use a REYES style renderer. MR sun and sky for instance is widely used by animators or modeller’s who have no need to learn rendering. However then we get a load of washed out blue and orange renders floating everywhere.
ICE would be awesome, however it would require a complete re-write of the whole maya codebase. ICE works well in XSI as its built from the ground up. ICE unfortunately isnt something u can just tack on. Maya’s primary focus is animation, compared to XSI which is now going towards dynamics, and 3DSMax which is going towards architecture/modelling/vis-rendering. I think Maya is significantly lacking and needs to be re-tooled almost completely. It needs updating both in UI and code, and lots of outdated features should be removed e.g. hypergraph, updated ie mentalray, the painfully slow hypershade, or completely re-done e.g. RBD, Hair & fur, general dynamics.
I am disapointed with viewport 2.0, it is a vast step-up from the standard viewport however compared to 3DSMax’s nitrous viewport or XSI’s viewport it is lacking. Its interesting as i left 3DSMax around version 9, then i moved onto Maya around 8/8.5, since then maya has had minor improvements and half-arsed features tacked onto it (nucleus - dont get me wrong its a good solver, but compared to XSI, realflow, houdini is a joke), while 3DSMax has had a major overhaul and imo has leapfrogged maya, the same goes with XSI.

I really would like Maya to add a few simple poly-modeling tools that Max has. Something that works more like the loft compound object and the sweep modifier from Max. Also, adding an extrude modifier to an .ai spline object is very useful. I know that Maya can accomplish the same things, but they are faster and easier in Max and I find myself switching back and forth just to use them, and I would rather just stay in Maya.

I don´t wish to new Maya any new functions. I wish to new version deeply fixing and improvement of current version so we will able to work with without messages like “Maya stop working ...” or “Fatal error ....” . Yes, than I will happy. But you know, fairy tale doesn´t exist ....

I just want Maya to work out of the box with no hotfixes no problems on Mac vs PC. I think Maya 2013 should be a complete rebuild designed with the original interface/ workflow in mind. but you know so it actually works without being able to break it.....sigh

Do not care at all for mental ray at all know that V-Ray is here, but would love ‘13 to be known for the modelling release.
