The Selection Tools Maya Has:

-Select Tool
-Lasso Tool
-Paint Selection Tool
-Marquee Selection Tool
-Soft Modification Tool

The Selection Tool I WISH Maya Had:

-Line Selection Tool (its kind of like a marquee selection but with a line gesture so it gives you more precision in tight spaces!)

You draw a line and any poly’ faces (or edges/verts) that fall along this path are automatically selected, creating a unique selection group (not a loop or ring). This gives a more precise control over selection when you don’t want an entire loop or ring.

How It Might Work:

1. Left Click
2. Drag your mouse out to create a line (face and or edge selections are made)
3. Release

Hold SHIFT and continue using to add to your selection.

There can be a ‘continuous’ mode where you have to right click to end the tool. Although simple gesture selection seems more appealing.

Also a pop-up menu for closing curves when a point overlaps the first point.

[Close]
[Continue]

You can have the option of turning this feature off.

This would drastically speed up work time as you would not be forced to dig in the menus (or shelves) just to attach a curve.
