Hello, I want to use a webcam and real time video as background or as texture onto a polygon. Does anyone know how to do this? I do not want to use a pre-rendered .avi or quicktime file....want to use the video directly coming off the webcam.

Hi cowboy,

This is not currently available as a standard feature in MotionBuilder- As far as I know, it may be possible to have live video stream into a backplane for camera or as a texture inside MotionBuilder with very specific hardware equipment and a custom version of MotionBuilder.  You would require a video card with SDI input/output for live video streaming and a custom coded plug-in for MotionBuilder to take the streaming input and draw as a back-plate for the camera or as texture.

If you wanted this functionality you would need to look at Autodesk consulting and custom engineering to get what you need. Further information on Autodesk Consulting is available from the link below-

Hello Lee,
Thanks for the feedback. Yes...thats exactly what I’m trying to......use live video as a texture or backplate. Yes...my graphics card does have SDI out.....MB will definitely “read” the webcam but just puts the standard “?” mark on a texture which says it does not understand. So at least it can find the webcam..

Custom MB or plugin....? I’m in Singapore and attending an Autodesk meeting this Friday....I will ask the question there.

Something tells me there is an easier way to do this.......or wishful thinking?

If MB can use a webcam for motion capture.....it must be able to run live webcam video......perhaps the problem is MB does not read real time Quicktime video????
