I’m having difficulties rotating a character’s hips in 2012. In MB 2010 I was able to rotate the hips separately from the charcter’s root. To do this I would set all the rotational reach values on the skeleton to 100, with the exception of the feet and the root, which would have the translation reach values set to 100 as well. Having chosen the body part mode in the character controls, I would then be able to rotate the hips leaving the rest of the skeleton unaffected. In Mb 2012, using the same rig, repeating these steps leaves me unable to rotate the character’s hips. I am either unable to rotate the hips at all, or the bone moves, but then snaps back to a position close the original location.

Are there new default settings that could be affecting the character controls, or is this a bug? any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

From my experience, there are several possibilities, here are couple:
1. Pinning (icons on the top right of the ‘Character Tool’).
2. If there is an existing animation in the Story, try to add a subtrack and ‘Accept Key’ on it - see if it works.

If you are using Story I actually believe that this is the problem otherwise I need to know a little bit more details about your animation setup - I can’t guaranty I’ll have a solution but I’ll try : )

Hi Ethan,

Thanks for posting a reply! I’m actually using a character that was built in 2010 and importing it into 2012. The root is not pinned and there are no story tracks. It’s a really strange thing as I am able to rotate the hips in 2010, and taking the same steps in 2012, I’m unable to.

I didn’t set up the character, but the rig appears to be a standard control rig. There are no special controls on the hip or spine.

If you have any other suggestions. I would love to hear them! thanks so much for taking the time to reply

Chris

If you can share the file either here or by PM’ing me it would be easier (I don’t promise I’ll have a solution but I am willing to look for the problem).
Otherwise it’s going to be a little bit hard to pin-point the problem - sorry (there are so many “tweaks” that MB can have).

Cheers!

Chris,

Did you ever solve your issue? I have the opposite issue. I can’t get anything to ‘pin’ at all. I think in a way my issue might be related to yours.
