Hi,

I’ve been working with the 5DT glove device on MotionBuilder 7.5. Although, most of the finger movements are reflected in the bound model, the pitch and roll movement are absent. The values in the columns are changing, but we don’t see it on the model. Is there something that needs to be done for it to be seen on the model? Also, how can we drive an actor’s hand using the info we get from the device? Can someone also tell me how to record the data from the device? I seem to missing some step. Although it creates a new take when I record it, when I playback the new take, I don’t see any movement.

thanks,

Hello,

Below are the steps to connect the 5dt to an Actor.

Connect the glove to the Actor.
1. In the Asset browser > Templates > Character > drag in an Actor.
2. Double click the Actor in the Navigator to see its settings.
3. Select the root of the glove and hold down the Alt key and drag it into the Glove reference cell in the actor.
4. Confirm the actor’s hands move with the recorded data.
5. Change the glove settings to ‘Live’ and move your hands.
6. Confirm that your hand is moving the Actor hand.

I have attached an image for your reference.

When you say the root of the glove do you mean the root of the glove’s model binding? And I’m not clear on where the Glove reference cell in the actor is. Where do I find the attached image you’ve sent?

thanks,
Neelima.

Hi again,

The recording procedure is basically the same for any device.

In the Navigator > Devices > double click the device and enable Recording in the Settings.

In the Transport controls, make sure you are at frame 0 and then press the Record button and then Play button.

Move the glove for a few seconds.

Press stop in the transport controls.

Disable recording in the device settings.

Select the Glove in the Navigator.

Select the FCurves tab and confirm function curves have been recorded to the glove’s model binding.

Double click the Glove in the Navigator and disable Online, Live, and Recording options.

To transfer the recorded motion to a character, create an actor and retarget to your character, and plot as necessary.  Or, create the Actor and use the device live to control the character’s hand movements.

Let me know if you need more details.

Regards,
Kelly

Hi Kelly,

Thanks. Now I’m clear on how to record the data. However, I’m still not sure how to transfer the recorded motion to the character or make the device control the actor live.
