Every piece of 3d software has a different way of smoothing its models (and smoothing uvs), so mudbox tries to give a few options to work with whatever 3d app you’re doing your final disp in. My hope is eventually all the major 3d apps will have full Catmull Clark compliant subdivisions, so meshes can be more easily moved between all 3d and sculpting apps.

I noticed that Mudbox still has some issues smoothing some uv boundary corners, even with the old smooth method enabled. Try importing and subdividing a 6 sided cube with the standard cross format UVs.
The inner corners (where 4 edges connecting to a vertex on the boundary) get ‘sucked in’ tight in the UV layout when subdivided. If you test the same thing in prman or Modo, they smooth out. you can see the same on the default car mesh, I’ve not seen any other app pull in a corner like that ?

Anyone have any thoughts ?
