Freeze brush on a layer?

Can I paint areas I want to freeze, but on a sculpt or paint layer so I can easily go back to modify it later?

Layer masks are handy for defining areas to work on that you might want to change later. I’ve used them for defining the edge of clothing and similar.

They don’t work with paint layers though sadly.
