Hey mudboxians, I’m working on a model right now with 17million polys, it’s running alright, and the layers are flattened, yet the size of my .mud file is 1.9GB, so basically it takes a minute or so to load and save the file. Is this normal? I tried using the ‘small file size’ option, but it came up with an error.. Maybe this is just how it is, considering the large dataset, but I’d like to know what other people’s experience is?

sounds pretty normal. My files are regularly 3 gigs and over because of layers. Haven’t tried the small file option.
question: Have you noticed that Mudbox creates a bak file with your mud files? It’s basically a clone backup. Is this an option I can turn off? will it speed the saving and opening operations up? anyone?

This is where having two 10k raptors in raid0 help a lot. Saving and loading huge mudbox files goes a lot faster.

Please be careful with the small file size option. There is a know bug with this. We are working on a patch for it.

Right, well seeing as I’m currently using an iMac, I’m pretty happy with the performance : ) - I’ll make sure I get a raid setup when I build my workstation.
