It is most likely the scale of your object. I know you tried to adjust the grid size, but did you actually try scaling the model up?
I’m guessing that just changing the grid size/unit size doesnt actually scale the model meaning that 1 unit is 1 unit.
If the brush size and strength are very small numbers, you’re scene is probably too small.
I use softimage, and sadly softimage has no real world unit of measurement, but 1 unit is 1 unit and you can define that relationship however you want. Usually I say 1 unit = 1 decimeter. However if i import a model modeled at that scale, its too small for mudbox.
So what I do is, I parent everything to a null and make sure my model is scaled to 1. I then make another null, and scale it very large. I then match the scale of the first null, to the scaled up null before sending geometry to mudbox. This allows me to keep my geometry at the scene scale I’m working in, and have the model at a good scale in mudbox.
Also another thing is… if you’re used to using the B and M keys to change size and strength, try using the [ ] and ; ‘ keys for size and strength. They will increment at smaller values.
