Mudbox OBJ export and vertex numbering

Can anyone tell me the procedure of vertex numbering that mudbox does on the meshes it exports.
Is there a method out there of renumbering the vertices of a mesh from another mesh that has the exact same topology? I know this is possible in Houdini, but i have no skills with the program.
