seams are not actually the problem here...looks like normal direction is the problem

This is coming from actual lighting...while the texture seams are not visible.

That, or one of the color channels of the normal map needs to be inverted.  This has to do with the requirements of the engine you view the normal map in.

Or perhaps overlapping UVs?

argh ok i’m an idiot.. i re-applied the normal map again thru “reload” in max and chose the individual normal map layer.. seemed to fix it.

i thought at first it was because it was a in a multi-layer material ...

i guess it was because i was hiding the layer in photoshop or maybe caues i re-ordered it? strange…

but its all good now.
thanks for the help!

I’m having a problem like this and decided I should post here instead of starting a new thread.

I have posted images of my character here: venom pictures

The first image just shows the character. I think image 6 shows the problem the best. The pictures are screen shots taken in Blender, which is what I will be rendering with.

The normal map is based on level 3 relative to level 7 (so no retopo for this one).

Something weird is happening around his feet. The image titled seams1.jpg shows this. There is a seam between the UV islands and also some additional seams which are related to the ray search distance during the bake, yet I don’t understand what is causing it. One of the areas in the image is labeled “1”. When I increased the ray search distance, it disappeared, which I thought it would. Yet the area below it is still there. The image venomUV1.jpg shows the UV island of his foot over the image.

I also include a screen shot of the nmap bake settings. I don’t understand what the lower, more advanced features do, so I must read up on those.
