Hi All
To those who could help.

I need to know the procedure to save a finished sculpture in mudbox onto a stick as a stl file so it can be put onto a 3D sculpting machine.

Have placed the file onto a stick but have to convert it to stl or slc file for it to work..

any help would be appreceiated.

If you have access to a 3D app like Max, or Maya or SoftImage, you should be able to save the model out of them as STL.

If you don’t have one, then MeshLab can convert from OBJ to STL files.

Hi Robinball

Thanks for your help about the Stl files.  Rodinball
So after all the problems with the Mudbox in the last 6 months all the requirments points to getting yet more soft ware to download stl files in Max or maya.. Why is mudbox so dependant on the use of Maya??. My text book of Mudbox has exercises in it all dependant on the sending of files to or from maya, with mo maya most of these exercises I carn’t do. Why wasen’t Mudbox designed to download files in a format that allows rapidprotyping of the sculpture. Is,nt this what mudbox is for ??? This Mudbox to me so far after trying to work with it for 6 Months and its complications just gets more and more frustrating. I really have regreated buying it, on top of a computer to run it.

So I looked at the meslab and downloaded it . I would have to say it is a great puzzle as to what is it suppost to do and how does one use it ?????

Was able to load up a cube onto the screen and that was all , the help is as most computer help menus was no help at all, apart from click this to drag this Clt to move this or that , but what else, nothing is explained as to how to use it.  I’m all ears for help

Mudbox isn’t designed as a standalone 3d modeling tool. It’s supposed to be a companion tool for a 3d app. You can’t make anything from scratch in Mudbox, only detail and paint existing models. So it’s expected that you will have some sort of 3d modeling software to make base meshes, or animate them or do the rest of the job, whatever that is. This is one of the reasons it’s included with the various Autodesk Suites. On its own it’s of limited use.

Obviously Autodesk would prefer it if you bought one of their 3d apps, but Mudbox will work with pretty much any 3d app. Blender is free and can load and save obj files so you can import and export files to that. I don’t know if it support STL files, but it probably does.

Meshlab is another free tool. That one is designed to handle high res scans. I’m sure it has lots of tools and is probably more complicated than you need. If all you want to do is load an obj file saved in Mudbox and save it out as an STL file, then that should be as simple as finding the save or export file menu.

Hi robinball

Thanks for your info. Well bit late to learn mudbox isn’t a stand along software. I don’t recall reading any paper work or anything on the web that informed me of this. I gess they wouldn’ hamper a sale of soft ware by saying this has to be bought with this. Or is it just that I didn’t do my homework well enough .
I had looked at setting up some graphic software to do all the model pieces as well, but expected i would have to spend 4 to 5 thousand to get good software that I have seen , Mudbox was impressive , a good lot cheaper and I thought it could give one an edge to create figures in 3D and have them 3D printed efficently and then cast. the other thing is learning how to use it ??? I gess now, that even that would of had its own set of set up and file problems too.

Thanks for the tip on the Blender download might look in to this.
If things don’t improve soon I can see a set of mudbox software 2011 going onto Ebay before the year is out.. Cut my losses. and end the frustration.
