Hi, student here, and I need to run Mudbox soon for my course.

I downloaded the student mudbox 2012 version, and all my objects are jet black. I get a pop up about updating my ATI drivers, and it still keeps coming up even after a variety of updates.

I’m working on a HP G7 Pavillion
SPECS http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/c...4354-5082232-5145849.html

Help much appreciated. Also do tell should I need provide more details, I’m new to all this.

I’m not sure, but Mudbox generally does not like ATI. In fact, most professional 3D products are going to favor Nvidia hardware because its what most of us use and trust due to historic events and the quality of Nvidia hardware & drivers, as well as the contributions of SGI’s engineers that switched over to Nvidia early on. They know OpenGL inside and out, because they invented it.

Basically, Nvidia is just better for what we do. That is probably not what you want to hear, but i think you will find less problems with Nvidia.

Also make sure that lighting is turned on.

Display>Lighting.

note: I run on nvidia GT425M. a small nvidia chip for laptop mass market. I has the same issue than you if not worst until I found the right driver that permitted me to open and and use mudbox.

As other will say, generaly speaking Autodesk are certified with professional Nvidia components (Quadro). I would suggest to check out of you can find a ATI forum somewhere and ask the same question. Perhaps with luck....

Mudbox 2009 seems ok with my laptop.

I would not expect a change but I think you can get it working. It’s just hard to offer advice, because most of us are not familiar with ATI and mudbox.

I have heard of people having issues with black objects in viewports. I recommend searching the forums, if you havent already. I just cant think of the solution off hand. Again its tough because most of us rely on Nvidia.

As of writing this the search function appears to not be working. I’m trying to search myself as i recall some discussion on ati and mudbox in the past. Unfortunately search seems dead.

Google…

site:area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-mudbox <search terms here>

Returns 5 pages of results (for “black objects") - no idea if any of them are relevent though ;)
