Hi there.  I am trying to uninstall the 30 day trial version of Mudbox 2011 (from a Windows XP SP3, 4G RAM computer) so that I can install the boxed version that I have purchased.  However, the uninstall will not complete and I get the following error,

Error 1402 could not open key

unknown\fbx\Fbx Scene. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnell.

When I click OK, I get a second message,

Fatal error during installation

Also, when I had originally installed the trial version, I did get an error message (sorry don’t remember exactly what it said), but the install did complete and I was able to use the program normally as far as I can tell (including exporting to fbx).  I also tried simply installing the boxed version, figuring maybe it would overwrite the trial version, but it would not install, saying that Mudbox 2011 was already installed on my system.

Any idea how I can uninstall the trial version?

Thanks in advance for any guidance

You could try first a less radical solution such as cleaning the registries (google for such applications), but if that doesn’t work you might want to reinstall windows, buy a new computer, move out to other residence or relocate to a foreign country. Usually the first two will do the job.
Good luck!

I did in fact look through the registry for any keys with the fbx\fbx Scene string with the hope that permission level somehow was set incorrectly.  But I did not find any such key.  There were several keys associated with the Fbx import and export, but as far as I can tell permissions were set to full control.

I also did run the McAfee clean tool which does some registry cleanup, but that did not work.  If there is a missng registry key, I am not aware of a registry fix tool that can create it.

Would appreciate any helpful suggestions.  (I have decided to hold off on reinstallig windows and rebooting my life in a foreign country ;)

Thanks for any guidance

OK, I managed to solve the problem by editing Permissions to the Fbx.Scene registry key.  Simply added a User named “Everyone” and granted full access for this key.  This allowed the windows uninstaller to comlete the uninstall of the trial version.  This approach apparently works for other application install/unistall issues with error 1402

Thanks anyway.
