Hi. I have seen this topic alot on this forum and i have almost read them all. some closer to my problem then others, but i havent found a real solution or understand the problem yet.

My computer spec is the quadro fx1700 card with the latest nvidia driver. Xeon 3.00 GHz cpu processor and 64bit vista. with 6g of ram.
Using the Mudbox 2010 sp1 education version.

My problem is opening the mud file as the topic says. i got 3 saves. the first one is at 1,8g second at 2,1g and the last at 2,8g. the mud file contains a character fully geared from max that im working on.

When im loading the 1,8g early save it lakes a min to load but after that every thing is fine and runs smooth. but as fast im exeeding 2g and tries to load either of the 2,1 and 2,8g i get the unknown error popping up. the cursor stards looking like its loading somthing but nothing happens.

I have tested the earlier bug with the freeztool beeing the issue but that seems to be fixed, and thats not it.

If some one could have a solution to this that would be great. If not i hope some one can explain whats going wrong so might secure my self for that when i start at my earlier save file for my 3 time now :)

Happy sculpting and i enjoy my mudbox.

Edit: I watch the ram increase in the task manager when trying to open the file. I have read that Vista sees 128g of ram so it should see all of my 6g. But the crash occurs around 3,8g used ram in the task manager. that means it still have 2g more to work on so that shouldn’t be the case either.

Which version of Vista? Its RAM usage is limited in the lower spec versions. I think Home Basic is 4gig and Home Premium is 8gig.

Edit- Actually it seems the 64bit versions are only limited to 8gig so you should be fine.

It is almost certainly your graphics card or driver that is causing this. Have a look at http://www.autodesk.com/mudbox-hardware

I have a similar graphics card (9500GS m I think) and whilst it’s not perfect it does work. I get an annoying pause after every stroke and view navigation for one and I can’t sculpt with symmetry when the second stroke will be behind the camera (say the inside of the base human’s hands with the camera close) or the view doesn’t draw properly and the stroke is blobby and uneven.

So looks like it’s probably a driver issue yes.
