Here is the finished Jack in the Box piece. Base mesh in 3Ds Max and details in Mudbox.

This was my entry for the Digital Artist 2009 competition, wich got me third place on the 3D Illustration category. By the way, the awards event at Blackall Studios in London was amazing! Impressive artwork all around.

Very awesome lighting and texturing, but I must confess that I disagree with the hair choice. I remember seeing the original mudbox model when you had just finished it and I felt it was more disturbing bald… made it less human like or something. It is after all, however, art… so who am I to say.

Nonetheless, awesome work.

Well, the hair was always in the concept. The idea is to emphasize a looming shape over the teddy, Like a claw. But a lot of people feel like you do, having seen the hairless model first. It happened to me also, so I often put the piece away for a few days just to regain a bit of that “first impression” observation. Anyway, in the end I think it also helped the composition, so Jack got to keep his Elvis look : )

Thanks for the input Jared.

That is Mudbox !!!

Now I’m sold :) That is excellent work, I’d like to animate something that.

Here is the story you could use if you were to animate.

A little boy sits down and notices the Jack-in-the-box, being a curious child that the boy is, he starts to crack the crack, slowly he cracks the knob with a little hesitation as the design of the Jack-in-the-box, somewhat intimidating.

The boy continues to crack the knob, slowly when the knob won’t turn anymore, the Jack-in-the-box doesn’t pop out instantly but rather a second or two pass, then the Jack-in-the-box pops out and says ”YESSSSSSS little one” the boy freaks and runs out of the room

And maybe Andy Serkis would agree to the voice acting, that would be cool!

Looks brilliant Krippmeister.

I personally DO like the hair, so I’m glad you decided to go with it. I think anyone who sports that Elvis look is a bit suspicious anyway.

I still think you should’ve had the bear holding a toy soldier (as if to protect him), like I suggested in the WIP ;o)

Also like the light coming from the box too.

Superb work.

That was a good idea, I just didn’t have the time to populate the pic more.

mmmm yummy gums ...

The shading on the gums is fabulous. The hair needs more work. If you cant get a good hair look maybe replace with a curved Punch’s hat.

Scary piece, really cool.

Yep, the hair was a big challenge for me. All the more reason to keep doing 3D hair until it looks decent though :)

Hey Kripp,
I was wondering if you had any formal training or if you have just learned this stuff on your own and how long have you been using your respective programs? Your work is very good and so I was wondering how long it took you to get so good as I am an aspiring artist myself. Any comments are appreciated and thanks in advance.

Well, I have my degree in graphic design from the fine-arts faculty of lisbon, so I guess you can say I have some formal art training, although in the design degree that subject is mostly only present in the first year. So, in the artistic side of things, my skill comes almost intirely from self teaching.

On the 3D side, I completed a short Max course at a training facility here in Portugal just to get me jump started. The first contact with a new technology and workflow, especially transitioning from a 2d art background, is often slow, and a bit of tutoring helps. But again, most of what I know now was self tought. However, this was by no means a blind process. There is a world of 3D knowledge on the web to teach something new to any 3D artist of any skill level.

I’ve been using Max on and off since Max5, but this Jack pic was really the first time I tried Mudbox. It’s very intuitive, at least fom someone with some traditional sculpting practice.

For me, the important thing is really to brush up on your art skills. Those are the ones you cannot get from a forum or help file. The technical aspects of the software and your knowledge of the techniques and workflows will increase naturally as you strive to put those amazing images you imagine on screen.

As for how long it took me to get here… 35 years I guess : )

Oh, and post your work here so you can get feedback. You will almost always learn something useful from a critique, positive or negative.

In the red bar at the top of this thread, click on “Subscribe to this thread” link. The old site automatically checked this upon posting.

Also, I still don’t think it notifies you when someone replies to a post (like I’m doing here), only for a new post.
