Since I am over my Jet-Lag and awake now, I find that its pretty funny my Artwork could cause so much bad attention. Oh well… I will just have to work harder on my next sculpt.

Really, the point of criticism is that it is constructive. A negative angle can be good and in fact negative criticism can often times be more useful than positive criticism. I don’t like getting “softballed” during critique and I agree that merely saying the work is good or great or amazing means absolutely nothing in terms of input. Praise can be patronizing but really, undercutting someone without giving them any constructive input is equally useless and fairly rude on top of that.

I see after all this time Oddity is still odd. You won’t go very far with your shameful way you talk to people. It’s very clear you don’t care about others ability and have no desire to help them. It’s ironic you’re putting out a DVD. Tell me are you going to sneer at the ones your trying to teach on the DVD too? Maybe you can send them a vial of spit so they can rub it in their eye before they watch your wonderful DVD. Clearly you seem to think being mean and blunt is the best way to teach someone.
There’s nothing wrong with criticism but I don’t think psychologically that’s why you troll around here. You do it to feel superior. You do it so you can push down the others here and make yourself feel good about yourself. That tells me you have some serious daddy or mommy issues and you’re a troubled person. The most talented usually are troubled in some ways and just like a bully, they lash out at others. Would it have been so hard to just change your tone a bit if you were really trying to help Starr? Did you have to take your finger and poke him in the eye while you told him he was terrible? I don’t think so.
Clearly you’re a very young and naive person regardless of your skill. Being respectful of others isn’t only reserved for the ones you admire or feel are better than you. It’s supposed to be awarded to everyone especially in the workplace because quite often those people who are not as talented as you end up being your boss and you find they don’t like you or and won’t hire you in the future.
But of course why listen to me? I didn’t show you my credentials. That’s clearly the criteria you abide by when learning everything. Did you ask your school teachers what their credentials were as they taught you the ABCs?
Mark my words, there will come a day when someday your snotty attitude will make you lose a job and eventually you’ll wear out your welcome at all the places you’ve worked and you’ll find that although everyone thinks you’re talented they don’t want to work for or with you because you’re a bully.
Just a little constructive criticism.
Just like you like it.

Heh, I’ve heard this illogical line of ‘reasoning’ from people like milowerx before.
It ignores the obvious reality that I only work with talented professionals who know exactly what they’re doing, and therefore I never need to criticise them in such a fashion. We all get along famously.
If I did ever end up working somewhere with a bunch of noobs who annoyed my by being useless, it probably would end in disaster, but I’m not sure how such a bizarre situation like that could ever arise.

oDDity,
you know sculpting is not THE only art there is. like intelligence, there’s more than one level of intelligence. you can be a good mathematician or scientist yet be completely dumbfounded in some other aspects, very pertinent aspects. such is you case, you are very proficient in sculpting yet so clumsy and incompetent in your relation to others and your self. you are not alone here, we all do it, it’s just that you are one of these extreme cases.
as some constructive criticism, i’d suggest reading into some books on spirituality, and applying the same attitude you have with sculpting to some other aspects of your life. i don’t know weather your life is a complete wreck or not, what i know is that you should apply it to your ego and relation to others. you are making your self look very bad as a person by not learning on the same mistakes you make over again.
starrshaw,
i am really impressed by the way you have handled oDDity. and for most of us knowledge comes via progress, not all of us are born into knowing as our friend here. you’re sculpt is not bad, sure it needs work to reach oDDity’s level but i’m sure you’ve progressed leaps with this work compared to when you first started. unfortunately from what i have read on this forum the same could not be said about Rod Seffen here with his honing of the self.

I totally agree with you n0ne, i run a small bussiness and i worked with some people like oDDity, i can tell you they are good at their work, but i will never work again with them, there are two parts in a good proffessional, and the first is not it’s direct work, because if you work on a team, persons like oDDity can poison the good mood and the attitude of the team, you can do many critics as you want, but there are ways of doing critics and ways of doing critics, you don’t have to be rude to say someone that his work is not as good as yours, it’s called emotional intelligence, or partner relatioship, i assure you that many great companies fire people like oDDity, not because a bad work, it is because a bad attitude.
I think you must buy a book oDDity, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, by Dale Carnegie, one of the best books in enhace your relationship with the people around you, it was written in 1936, and today is still one of the best books in this area.
About your work starrshaw, i don’t think is so bad, of course you must apply more anatomy, and in my opinion you must work more the base geometry to gain decent level of detail without having problems, your base geometry is like a sketch to a drawing, so your sketch must be good at proportions and base parts so your final drawing is good at anything else.
Cheers.

Thanks, Well I would like to say this.
This post makes me sad, not about my artwork.
I still am happy with this work, I know I need to learn more, but you have to start somewhere. Sculpture is just a part time activity for me, and Anatomy even smaller. I am a CG artist and work as one everyday, tons of other stuff to learn, not only Sculpture and Anatomy. Being Creative, thats tough to do day in and day out. Creativity is very difficult under a tight deadline let me tell you. And thats not all, Code Programing, SEO, Social Networking, Business Management. And the Most Important, More I would say than all these skills put together. More important than mastering any One of these skills.
People Skills. Getting along with Clients, Co workers, and Family helps your business and career in Art. Keeping the wife happy, thats a full time job. (LoL).
What makes me sad about this post, and sad about the internet in general is how people treat each-other. I just posted my artwork, not thinking it would cause something like this, totally strangers practically attacking me, who don’t even know me.
I so very very much appreciate you guys that defend me on this post. You go out of your way to do this and you don’t even know me.
Not only for me, but for everyone who post here. If we want to build a community, we need to support each other, we are not enemies.
I like oDDitys work, I think he is a good artist. I sometimes agree with him, but people have feelings, especially artist. Our artwork is special to us.
All of us here, we are not competitors. We are colleagues.

LoL! Thanks for the nice comments. :)
I really need to do another sculpture soon! I have been working hard at work, trying to learn Javascript for a work project in my spare time… and dealing with my OS X Snow Leopard upgrade which really messed my CG apps and made Mudbox 2009 super slow :(
I have a feeling this forum is going to get better! I hope people start posting again! My post has been #1 for like 3 months… and well, I am not so happy with this post.
