What is the best way to start modeling a character (with image reference), in Maya or in Mudbox ?

Please advice, thanks!

Oglu is very much correct in that you should learn the basics first.

ZBrush has a lot of geometry creation tools, where as Mudbox does not. Often people will start their model in ZBrush and retopologize it, bring it into Mudbox and sculpt. Some people start in Maya, Softimage or 3dsmax and then import into mudbox. There are various ways to mix and match the workflow these days.

You will need one of the major 3d animation packages to accomplish whatever it is you’re doing.

For those of us who have been around through the evolution of 3d… it really is amazing how easy mudbox and Zbrush have made our lives but.... they are just tools apart of a much larger workflow. There are no short cuts to being good at this. Start with the basics.
