Mudbox in Autodesk Product Design Suite..

Can anybody tell a sustainable reason, why mudbox is on the Basic Product Design Suite? no matter what i do i can’t find a way to effectivily import/export meshes between AutoCAD & Mudbox..

On the higher versions of the suite theres no further problem because 3dsMax is included, but what i am supposed to do if i only have the lower version?

At this time nobody has been able to answer.. Hope that you guys can work it out.

I’m curious, what are you trying to sculpt that is in autocad? Mudbox is generally used as a character sculpting tool.

Although, I suppose if Autocad can export/import polygon FBX or Obj files… you can. (As long as those meshes are quad polygon)

Well, by now im just working on developing an effective work flux between Autodesk Product Design Suite components so as you can see Mudbox is there.. i know that Mudbox is generally used as a character sculping tool, that’s why i wonder myself even more what the heck is it doing on a product design suite?..

Althought AutoCAD supports FBX files, when i import a mesh (quad poly) from AutoCAD into Mudbox it subdivides itself into Triangles, if you try again to subdivide it, it subdivides the triangles into quads..

So you kinda get the picture of the whole mess it becames..

autodesk can’t even answer that qestion

Design is a wide subject. There are different ways of working. In my company we use Alias ​​and Siemens NX together. The design is created in Alias and the surfaces are used as planes in NX where solid modeling is performed. One way to use Autodesk software suite would be to create sculptures or similar with Mudbox, which are being reviewed in Max to be drawing in Autocad. Or a building Acad put in Max with Mudbox geometry and rendered into a visualization image. I think that there may be how many approaches as there are business or job. I miss Maya in this suite but that is another matter.

Yeah, s03241, that’s exactly why Mudbox is in the Design Suite.  The brush based toolset in Mudbox offers an approach very different from the standard design toolsets.  The Mudbox toolset offers a direct approach to shaping (and coloring) in 3D that both a) lends itself to the creation of shapes and detail that are difficult or even impossible with other toolsets and also b) is useful for rapid ideation and problem solving in 3D. 

Here are a few videos that demonstrate what I’m talking about:

1) Yale Architecture uses Mudbox.  This video is quite inspiring and highly recommended.  The tools we use influence the design we produce.

2) Exploring ideas in 3D. [Fair warning: this is a needlessly large file, 125mb] Watch a designer explore shapes quickly in 3D, enjoying direct contact with the surface—like working with clay.

3) Shaping a car.  This is a very old video showing an artist sketching out a car design in Mudbox.  Mudbox is not just for characters and organic stuff.

But Jerry, you’re right; this is the first time Mudbox has appeared in the Design suite, and the workflows with the other applications haven’t really been optimized yet.  If you don’t have software to produce custom base poly meshes that you can subdivide and sculpt in Mudbox, try searching for useful base meshes in the “Mudbox Community” tab.  But remember, you don’t need to start with a fully articulated model—even simple cubes and spheres can be sculpted into complex objects for problem solving, ideation, first stage client approval, etc.

Quite right Andrew this was the approach i was trying to reach maybe i wasn’t very clear at the beggining..
I’m aware of Mudbox capabilities as an “out of the box” 3D designing tool, is totally different from what we’ve been working so far, the problem now is the intercommunication between software as you pointed out, If i don’t count on any software to produce custom base poly meshes, my workflow is limited to the base meshes i can encounter down at the Area.

Anyway this post of yours has been pretty useful, thanks for your time answering.
