Sounds like a bug perhaps.

Can you post the steps to reproduce this using the default head mesh?

Thanks

First problem.

1. Basic head on subdivision level 2. Selection area.

head01

2. Invert selected polygons (ctrl+shift+i)

head02

3. Hide polygons (h) and sculpting without problems on subdivision level 1 and 2

head03

But when I go to level up to subdivision level 3, step 3 looks at this

Head04

Hiding polygons is not correctly and sculpting on this area is not possible.

Second problem.

1. Select polygons and click Display/Hide Unselected. Sculpting works correctly on subdivision level 1 and 2

2. When you unhide poligons, deselect polygons are imposible.

3. On subdivision level 3 sculpting not work and unselecting polygon are imposible.

Hi, I had similar problem but at object selection level. I selected an object and hit on Display menu “hide unselected”. I paint the object visible, and when finish, to unhide the other objects, go to Display “show all”. Since that moment, all the object that was hidden, cant be selected anymore. It’s a big bug. At this moment, the only way I found to solve that was simple: repeat the process again. So, I select again the same object and hit again “hide unselected”. Nothing happens, but now all the objects are selectable again. You can try it with poly selection, maybe it works.
Good luck!
