Ok, I am trying to establish a workflow for creating models for animation. Trying to ensure great topology and detail. Here are my steps: 1) Create rough mesh in [b]Maya[/b] 2) Import to [b]Mudbox[/b] and sculpt at a high level 3) Import the high level obj file into [b]Topogun[/b] as a reference for retopology 4) Save retoped reference as a obj and import into [b]Mudbox[/b] for final details and baking normal maps 5) Import the low poly object into [b]Maya[/b] 6) Create my uv's using [b]Headus UV Layout[/b] 7) Paint textures in [b]Photoshop[/b] 8) Create shader network in [b]Maya[/b] and connect my normals and additional maps Has anyone tried a similar workflow and do you see any major issues with this process? Im concerned about the uv's, should they be unwrapped very early in the process or can i unwrap in the final stage? Note: I am not using any textures in mudbox, just looking to get a nice form to retop in topogun.

New to 3D modeling (searching for techniques)

Hello experienced sculptors. :) I have just recently downloaded the student version of Mudbox and I have twiddled around and got my hands "muddy" as I've explored this vast new world of 3D modeling. As I explored I developed questions, questions that I'd like answered. Here is a list of things that I thought of while sculpting. What is the recommended method of sculpting multiple high-detail features on say a face? For instance I want to make a pair of eyes but I don't want to meddle with them while sculpting the cheek-bone or brow. I know about freezing and locking, is that it? Is there a way to edit the mesh of an object directly? Or is there some other way to make surfaces flat without using the flat brush? This would help for some hard surfaces I'd like to integrate into my models. What are the necessary steps for preparing a model for painting and texturing? Sorry if this is too much at a time to answer, I just have so many questions and nobody to ask. As a bonus (haha) I've included a picture of my first rough, WIP mesh I currently call "Steampunk Pilot." Thanks for reading my post. - Onyx

Displacement Map Problem

Hi Guys. I am a beginner. I have 2 questions. 1-I sculpt an object but when i extract displacement map, the map is so much lighter than what i sculpted. Look at my example below. Even though i sculpted very deep holes, the map looks gray and no black spots at all. http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/5526/sp8u1v1g229056.png 2- I want my box's edges to look like this and i create a simple box in 3ds Max. Then i send it to Mudbox. And sculpt it like in the photo and i extract a displacement map. But when i render it it doesn't look any good. What is the solution to make edges like this? Handy technique for sculpting fabric panels or padding

This might be old news, but it was a new discovery for me. When I’m making clothing, gloves etc I often create padding, patches or fabric panels by initially drawing them out on my mesh with paint layers. I then use these paint layers to create displacement maps that I then use with ‘Sculpt with Displacement’. This all works ok, but I sometimes find there’s just not enough geometry in the areas I’m trying to displace. For example I want a fabric panel edge to be a nice sharp line, but I find that it has a bit of ‘stepping’ or ‘jaggyness’ to it. I have found a way to sort his out: I’ll use an example of a racing driver shoe I’ve been working on. Workflow images attached are numbered to correspond with the steps below. 1. I first paint in the panels I want to create on the shoe to depict the layers of leather panels. 2. I now use the exported paint texture .psd to create maps to ‘Sculpt with Displacement’. 3. I’ve displaced all the panels I want. This looks ok from a distance, but up close there are’ jaggies/stepping’ and it’s not as clean as I want to be. There’s basically not enough geo in the areas I’m displacing to be able to get nice clean panel edges. 4. Now if I went in and pinch brushed the geometry around the panel edges all that would happen is the geo would get drawn in, but it also erodes the displacement I’ve created. Not ideal. Now this is the useful bit: 5. Create a new layer called ‘pinch layer’ and then turn off your displacement layers. 6. Turn your paint layers back on. Now use the pinch brush along the edges of your painted panels until you have perfectly neat edges. 7. Now switch your displacement layers back on and you’ll see the geometry has been drawn in towards the panel edges, but it has retained the displacement. Yay! 8. Now as a final polish I create another layer called ‘soften pinch'. 9. Now turn off your pinch layer and smooth along the edges of the displaced geo. 10. Now switch your ‘pinch layer’ back on and you have a should have really nice neat panel edges. No ‘stepping or jaggies'. The final image shows the finished result. Red

Mudbox Ambient Occlusion Turntable Issue

I can't seem to figure out why is it that when I render out my turntable for my ambient occlusion pass in Mudbox 2012. I have an issue where my render cuts-off some areas of the ambient occlusion extremely harshly, and I'm not sure as to why. Any Suggestions???
