I’ll be writing a tutorial on it shortly.

In short…

if you’re using a 32bit displacement.. use change rage node but keep it at 0 1. (just use the change range just in case you want to push it, but leave it at 0 to 1)

Use the displacement depth as the max displace in the geo approx. Use Fine setting, view dependent, .5 or less for length (start there and work down… the lower the setting, more polys get made). Teselation steps 0 1. (start there cause if theres too much xsi will crash while rendering. ) Also SubD your mesh to level 1 when rendering.

It seems when you use 32bit displacements in xsi.. the change range depth can be left at 0 to 1.

Also it seems to be a balancing act between edge length and the tesselation settings. you can go to .01 edge length and 0 2 tesselation and get nice results, but you’ll get lots of polys… OR you can do .5 edge length and go 0 4 tesselation… you’ll get lots of polys as well. The detail will be similar but artifacting may be different.

You have to toy with these settings.

Hi Baroody,
I also would love a quick tutorial for Mudbox to XSI workflow. I downloaded the trial a couple of days ago and love it already, very small learning curve but when I bake the displacement map and try to apply it to the XSI model it doesn’t show anything, I have looked around and found some tips but still doesn’t show any change. I’ll upload some graphics later to show you the settings I’m using to see if you or anyone can pinpoint what I’m doing wrong. I would appreciate any help since I’m having a hard time finding any info for XSI.

When displacement isn’t working for me, its usually because the image format I’m using isn’t working. Have you done all the steps suggested ^?

How do you guys solve displacement seam issues? I did some tests in xsi, and wasn’t able to find any settings that didn’t result in a seam at the uv borders.
