I am unsure why my displacement map is not working.  I keep getting a message saying mental ray has become unstable and maya needs to be shut down.  If anyone knows how I can fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

The high res model in Mudbox and the low res model in Maya,

I have managed to get it to render in Maya having set the length option to 0 in the mentalraySubdivApprox but now it is showing no displacement.  I would love to make this work but imagine I am probably just not getting something.  I have followed AK’s tutorial as well as the dino head with no luck.  I just read about scaling your base model up by 150 % in maya before taking it into Mudbox which I did not do and wondered if this could be the problem.  Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Cheers,
Leon Labyk

I have finally managed to get the displacement map to work.  I had to scale my model down so it is now tiny but the map is showing up.  Got to work on things in mudbox a bit more especially the lips but it is looking like mudbox is well worth me investing in.  I just hope that I can tweak my model in mudbox and simply re-apply my displacement map to it.

just a quick side note : if you extract 32bit float maps and scale the object, you need to use the scale factor as displacement height.
The 32 bit maps are written out in worldSpace values so any change in object height needs to be reflected in the displacement height in order for the maps to show up properly.

cheers,

I am scaling the entire object though and not just the height.  Surely the map should go onto the object be it at 100 % or 250%.  Is there an option I can check so the displacement map will work on my models without being effected by my scaling them.

Began trying to get the displacement maps on the clothes and have run into problems again.  I thought I had things sussed since I managed to get the head working.  Either Maya does not like displacement maps, or more likely I just can’t get it.  In need of ideas badly.
