The brush alpha is round with adjustable radial falloff. While this is OK in most cases, I find there are times when I am using stamps, especially repeating stamps, that I am constantly adjusting my stamp gradients in PS to get them to work as I expect with the brush falloff. Sometimes I would like a hard edge on the trailing edge of my repeating stamp, or to the sides. It takes a lot of fiddling around with falloff and stamp to get satisfactory results, and most times it is a compromise. Or maybe I missed something. Using stencils works for this but is a lot slower. Anyone else find this a frustration or have any tips?

Any hope of an advanced option button to turn on two falloffs on X and Y on the brush alpha. I would trade a temporary reduction in brush performance for this while its turned on if thats the case.

Create a flat (maxed out) brush falloff preset. You can then call this up when needed.

Thanks for stimulating the grey matter Wayne. When I saw your post I thought Ive already tried that already, then I realised that my fundamental error was that I was making my stamps with a mid grey background and that with the maxed brush I need a black background. Tried it out and sure enough problem solved. Makes life much easier. Ill buy you a beer if you are ever in NZ

cheers

Another thing to bear in mind is that you only need the ‘white paqrts’ of your stamp or stencil unless you wish it to go in two directions.  (For an example of this look at the 32 bit stamp used for the knife....) As it support 32 bit tiffs/ openEXR’s etc with transparencey you can make your stamp or stencil only contain what you need and not have to fill it full of a solid colour.  Think of these 32 bit imagesa bit like a displacement map and it opens up a whole new world. ;)

If I ever make it down to NZ I’ll be sure to call you on that beer lol. :)
