The title is self explanatory, but just in case it’s not:
A paint brush that works like sculpt brush called Imprint would be very useful. The way you drag and rotate/scale with Imprint brush (very similar with zbrush’s stroke mode).
I did a search before posting this and I didn’t find anything so… excuse me if it is already posted.
Further more I’m kind of a newbie in Mudbox so it may actually be possible to paint in this manner with the current tools and if so, please tell me how (I know about stencils and how can they be scaled and rotated, but this is not what I’m looking for).
Thanks!
p.s. I’ve forgot on thing: apparently there’s a bug with Imprint brush when using a wacom 3 tablet and pen. When stamp is enabled nothing happens as you drag on the model (except when you click one pen button MMB or RMB like it is described in this thread: http://area.autodesk.com/for...lp/imprint-brush-broken-/ ). I’ve noticed that when “Draw from center” is disabled, it works.

What exactly do you want to do that you cant do with a stencil?

Well, the same thing you do with Imprint brush, but paint instead of sculpt. It’s much faster and preferable in certain (many) situations. You can do sculpting without Imprint as well and if I’m not mistaken, Imprint brush was added recently.
Theoretically you can do everything with just the Sculpt(standard) brush, but we have variations just for the sake of making the process easier. Isn’t this all of us want? :)

Imprint has been there since version 1. I actually never use it because I found the implementation so horrible. I think it could be a useful tool but don’t find it so in its current form. It could allow for more accurate placement if it projected the image on the actual geometry, but at present I just do everything with stencils :p .

I’m just curios, what exactly do you find horrible about its implementation (leaving aside the bug mentioned earlier)? I find it pretty useful, but maybe it’s just me with my low expectations :)

I also don’t care for the way imprint works. I don’t like dragging from the corner. It seems a little “clunky” that way. I prefer to pull from the center. That way you can be very precise about the placement. This method does work faster than stencil. For stencil you need to keep dragging around, scaling up and down, etc. When you use imprint and can just pull from the center you can build up tons of texture really fast. It’s not so much a capability request as much as a speed request.
That’s just my two cents. I really love Mudbox, but this functionality from ZBrush would be a welcome addition.

I also wish imprint worked from the centre out. I wished it on here before and Andrew said it was a trivial change. Didn’t happen though.
Here’s why I’d prefer it centre out- From end to end you can’t easily apply them in different orientations if the stamp is going to cross a geometry border. Say I was applying a set of wrinkles across the inside of an elbow. You can only apply them up and down the arm. If I try to apply them across I can’t as I’d have to drag from off the model. I find this limits the options for applying them.
And you can’t preview the result either.
But at least now the maps are filtered I don’t get the nasty stair stepping I used to at some angles.
So yeah I think the similar tool in Zbrush is far more effective in this case.

But it works! It’s true that not without glitches, but it’s usable.
Anyway this thread is about a texturing tool like Imprint, not Imprint itself so please prioritize the discussion on that.
On a side note, I wish that Paint brush with a stamp active would work a little bit more intuitive, because right now if you just click nothing happens - you have to drag a little and sometimes you’ll end up repeating the stamp if don’t change the value of repeats from the default one.
