I know everyone is dying for texture painting in Mudbox! But with painting tools, we still have to deal with UV unwrapping. Would it be possible for SkyMatters to partner up with Headus to integrate UVLayout into future versions of Mudbox(2.0)?

Mudbox is a awesome sculpting tools, soon to have painting in its future, it’ll need a very capable UV tools. UVLayout seems to be best UV toolset on the market IMO.

You can try a fully function 30 day trail version of UV Layout here and judge for yourself:

That would be really great, I’ve recently purchased the program and it flat out works.  Dunno if the Cyslice/UVLayout guys are into licensing the technology, but I second your motion.  Or, how about Skymatter buying out the remains of Mirai?
The Fixup tools in Mirai would be nice utilities to have in MB.  Utilities like Mirai’s for culling the mesh would be very useful when bringing objects in from diverse modelers.  MB seems to be a bit picky, and who can blame it. So, something to ‘clean’, and ‘validate’ the mesh would be very helpful.

Integrated UVunwrap tools could be nice. Eliminates the need for a different app to make that step, but I think first Skymatter needs to focus on the sculpting aspect first before tackling extras. One thing I love about MudBox is it’s focus on pure sculpting without adding the clutter of other non-sculpting tools. However, I can see the sense in integrating a UV unwrap feature as it relates to the mesh after detailing...and MudBox is so very nearly perfect, they may run out of things to update and will need to branch off into other aspects of the model creation.  But first, speed speed speed is they key and being able to handle billions of polies would be super nice. :)

:D Don’t get me started on Mirai(I love it!!). It has some decent 2D/3D texture painting tools also. However, skymatters won’t benefit from buying izware, since Mirai is written in LISP, whereas Mudbox is written in C++. :(

PS> if it weren’t for the driver issue i’d still be using it today.

Agree, Mudbox is very very near perfect. But “when” they decide to implement texture painting, they’ll need some awesome UV unwrapping tools to go with it. It would suck to have great sculpting, painting, but have subpar UV tools. Personally i like the workflow in UVLayout and the toolset itself. But if Skymatters can come up something as good as UVLayout, then more power to them!

IMO, the bar has been set by UV Layout. :D How they match this bar, is totally up to them.

Wasn’t trying to hijaack the thread with the Mirai stuff, I know you’re a Mirai guy, me too.  the first really, truly, level of genius interface in the 3D world history.  I still have a separate win2K machine to run Mirai...oh well.  Back to the subject; yeah, UV tools in the same work environment, absolutely desired.  Retopo?  Paint? As well.

I used Mirai too, but now I’m on XP. So you’re telling me Mirai won’t run on XP?  I haven’t tried it yet. Also, are they pretty much dead or what? I haven’t checked on Izware in a while.  I was hoping and praying for the day when they’d make a comeback and take the world by storm. Mirai + Mudbox workflow would be awesome.

Frankly, just buy UVlayout. Its all i’ve been using for a while now. It has been in Beta for so long and publically available, i’ve grown to realize that while it has its bugs… it is the best uv mapping tool out there. I plan to buy UVlayout very soon (just want to see some of the bugs gone).

Mirai still can work on XP, but with older graphics drivers. The new graphic driver, have OGL artifacts. I sent a email to Greg, maybe he’ll reply?

I’ll probably buy UVLayout also. But im the type of guy that likes to do most things in a single app(as much as possible). A nice middle ground would be, if Mudbox had a SDK, then maybe the headus developers can get UVLayout to Mudbox connection talking to each other.

The idea of having Skymatter hook up with the UVlayout folks has come up before on this forum:

This was the closer for me to buy the program at the still pre-release price.  I had used the demo and was impressed with not only the interface and output, but Phil Dench, the developer is incredibly sharp and helpful.  Be interesting to see what the Skymatter guys have up their sleeves.

I bought UVlayout last night and I re-did my lowpoly model this morning.
It was the best investment besides MudBox I have ever made. I have used and Beta tested some of the best UV solutions out there and there is no question Headus got this right. Their main guy “Phil” is also great guy and went out of his way to get me up and running even on his day off. The Beta is 175.00 at the moment and the price will shoot up to around 375.00 with the official release.
I have always hated laying out UV’s in Maya but it is actually fun and super fast with the Headus software.;)

Wow, quite a nice review. I just may have to drop some bills for this one. I have a question though. How does UVlayout match up to Bodypaint’s LSCM unwrapping tools?
