Another suggestion,

In the paint layers panel, would be great when you pressed the + button the option to add a procedural texture layer, some basic stuff for starting, like fractal noise, crumple, perlin… Just to blend textures better. When you are happy with the result you would have the option to bake the procedural to whatever resolution you wanted. Another thing that would be useful, is a tile layer, you load your tile, repeat it many times you wanted across your model and then again, you could bake it to whatever resolution you wanted to.
