I would love to see Vector Displacement output for use with Mental Ray etc. This would also enable the use of Vector Displacement Brushes and painting geometric detail with overhangs in one stroke. Finally animating displacements becomes easier.

There is an interesting thread on this…

Yes vector displacement is indeed very useful, providing solid pipeline can be maintained of course..otherwise its as useful as a chocolate tea cosey. :) But I’ ve a feeling we may see it at some point. ;)

I would LOVE to see vector displacement generation and usage in mudbox. I am working on a film where we are using regular displacement maps right now and I must say, working with animating displacement maps has it fair share of problems to deal with. Vector displacement would minimize these headaches and also allow for some pretty extraordinary brushes to come into existence.

You’re right about the pipeline. But thinking about the whole concept I’m quite positive it will be a common feature in tomorrows rendering engines. Right now there’s this shader for XSI and I think one for Lightwave. I don’t really know how to setup things in MAX or Maya. If anyone does I would be interested.
