Hi all,

Hope you can help,

I’ve just got SBP 2010 which I’m very happy with, however I’ve got one (well two) big problems in that I can’t open or save my work. When I try to open a new document I don’t get a new windows to choose my work from, this happens also when I’m finished drawing, I either go to ‘Save As’ or just close the program where I should be presented with another box asking me where I would like to save my work, but nothing appears. I have tried reinstalling the program after fully removing it (and it’s left over registry data) but still the problem occurs. All other programs are working fine.

EDIT - This is strange… If I run SBP in Vista SP2 compatability mode then start it, then close it and start it again the menu options re-appear. Is there a problem with SBP and Windows 7 x64 bit? As this is what I’m using.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Hi Orb,

As a standard proceedure, can I ask you what your machine details are, graphics card, driver version, tablet model, etc.

Have you tried to drag and drop an image into Sketchbook from and explore window?

As far as I know, we have not seen this on Windows 7 64bit.

Hi Sydney,

Thank you for replying.

As you mention you have not seen the problem I am reporting.. I am now considering the fact that this issue could actually be a problem with my machines configuration. The reason being is that I installed SBP on my laptop today (Also running Windows 7 x64 bit) and Sketchbook Pro worked without issue, as did it’s menu’s.

So I will further investigate this problem on my main machine and if necessary re-format the hard drive, just incase I have corrupted some registry entries or something recently creating this problem.

Kind Regards

Orb

I decided to load SBP onto my laptop today (running the same Windows 7 x64 bit) operating system, and on the laptop SKP is running ok however there does seem a slight glitch on the screen when selecting the ‘Open’ or ‘Save As’ button innitially after the program is opened.

Hi,

I have the exact same problem. I purchased Sketchbook Pro 2010 SP1 and installed on Windows 7 Professional x64.
It runs fine, but I can’t save, save as.., or open a file. The explorer menus don’t appear.

Any idea what’s causing it?

My computer’s specs are:

Gateway FX6802-07C
Intel Core i7-920 2.66GHz
RAM 12 GB DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 1798MB
Windows 7 Professional x64

Thanks

I thought it may just have been my machine, but obvioulsy not. The only way I have found to overcome this is to open SBP, close it. Then open it again. Once you’ve done this the menu’s should work again but only for that session. It’s a pain having to do this and the important thing is we HAVE to remember to do it. Otherwise you could have done a great drawing and lose the lot because the menu’s to save it don’t show up.

Hi Orb...yes, your suggestion seems to be the only one that works at the moment. It is a bit of pain in the arse. It worked well under Vista, but I guess something glitched in Windows 7.

I hope a solution by Autodesk is forthcoming.

Hi Orb and Greylok,

This certainly sounds serious.  I’ll look further into this with whatever Win7 resources we have here.  Please standby.

Hi Orb and Greylok,

Could you please provide a few more information:
- Have you installed ALL the microsoft windows updates on your 64bit window 7?
- Have you used a dual monitor setup on your window7 before?
- Is there any other sketching/painting program on your system? What are they and how do they work?
- Did Sketchbook ever work on your Windows 7 before?

There are also someting you can try out:
- Go to “C:\users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\SketchbookPro”, find the “4.0” folder, rename it as “4.0backup” or something else for backing up your user preference. Then relaunch Sketchbook to see if it works now.
- Use your workaround to bring back the save as dialogue, save a file on a USB drive, close and relanuch SBP to see if it can work.

Please let us know if these work for you. Thanks.

Hi,

In reply to your questions:
1. All updates are installed Windows 7 x64 professional
2. First time using windows 7. Using a dual monitor setup on an NVIDIA gtx260 1798mb
3. Sketchbook is the only sketching tool on the system
4. Haven’t tried it on Windows 7 (new installation), but it worked fine on Vista Ultimate x64
5. Backing up the preferences from scratch and running was the first thing I did initially, but it didn’t work.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply
I was suspecting that you might left the dialogue on another sereen when you were using dual monitors. Apparently that’s not the case since you have already reset your preferences.
We will keep investigating into this problem and keep you posted.

Hi,

1. All updates are installed on my Win 7 x64
2. No dual monitor setup used
3. I use Photoshop CS4 also for drawing and that works fine
4. As far as I can remember SBP has always had these issues on Win 7, even following a full format.
5. I tried the preferences rename also but without success.

Regards

I’m wondering if Sketchbook is choking on the Win7 file browser?  Do the open or add image browsers work fine for you guys?

Also have you guys tried dragging an image from your desktop directly into Sketchbook?

Hi Sydney,

Images dragged into SBP do work without having to open the program twice, however the ‘save as’, ‘open’ etc options still do not show up unless the program is closed then re-opened again. Only after that does everthing work as it should.

I second Orb’s workflow. Drag & drop works, but can’t save as, open… unless re-launched a second time.

I have the same problems

“save”
“save as...”
“save copy as...”
“Open...”

Doesnt work at all at first run of the program
but on second run it works fine.

I’ve upgraded my working PC and it came with Windows 7 64-bit version,
I’ve used XP pro before with no problems at all.

Would be nice with a fix for Windows 7 64-bit version coming out soon, It’s annoying to have to start the program two times.

Your pc specs in this case doesnt matter its a glitch/bugg between windows 7 64-bit and Sketchbook Pro.

Hi everyone.

I got problem with SBP and win7 too. SBP just do not start. At least if I could open it twice to make it work it would be less painful…

I worked with it on Vista 64 with no problem, but upgraded to Win7 Ultimate 64 and it don’t work anymore…

Config : Dell XPS 435, Intel i7 920, Win7 Ultimate 64, dual monitor setup - was already on dual before upgrading ; kept the same machine, just upgrade the OS

Thanks for looking at solutions.

Alain

Hi, people!
Since I have the same problem as anyone else here on Win7 x64 (Nvidia ION / 2GB of RAM on Wacom DTF521, intel Atom), it’s useless to just parrot the issue, that everyone else said. However; I’ve used Microsoft’s Process monitor (ex procmon from sysinternals), and I’ve tried to debug the SBP. And it seem, that there are quite some buffer overflows when trying to open win7 DlgSave / DlgClose.

I’m attaching the debugger output, because it’s freakishly late for me to try to figure out those 1500 entries in it. Plus, I’d rather see the debugger on a bit lower level to see, if my predictions are at least somewhat correct.

Wolfy over and out.

**update on this one**
Reinstalling the latest Wacom drivers done the trick. Awkward issue, and I’m keeping my eye on this one, and I’ll go again trough the debugger once again after getting some nap.

In the meanwhile—People with the issue; Can you specify, what kind of tablet do you use, and if possible version of the driver?
thanks.

**edit 2**
Upgrading drivers worked. No more buffer overflows in the DlgOpen / DlgSave. That is all.

And it seems that there is no need for log to be attached anymore :3
