I recently got sketchbook pro 2011 and noticed that sometimes when I save my work (psd file), the color depth of some layers decrease. I usually do not notice it until I reopen the file later, forcing me to repaint whatever got affected.  After googling around I couldn’t find anything related to my issue, nor have I been able to pinpoint what’s causing it. (When this happens, I do notice a locked background layer magically added to the file upon opening it.)

Is this a bug or is there some setting causing this?

Thanks.

Here’s an example of what I mean.
On the left it’s sort of noticeable that the color depth decreased, but I didn’t notice it until I saw what I saw on the right.

[edit #2]
I know what caused the added locked backgroud layer. Each time I saved my work under a different filename, that is when a locked background layer is mysteriously added when I reopen the backup file. I did a test and with each new save under a diff file name, a new locked “Background (Sketchbook)” layer was added while the color depth loss became more and more noticeable.

In a different scenario there was still color depth loss on the original file. I tested by repeatedly painting, saving, new file, then reopening the file. Color depth slowly continued to decrease each time. This makes me wonder if there’s something buggy with saving (psd) files. When I tested with a tif file, the colors stay perfect.

Hm...Hoping this problem will be fixed soon. I currently use Corel Painter and Photoshop, and also use (& love) Sketchbook Pro for the iPad, and just bought the desktop version. Currently working on drawings for a children’s picture book (I’M BORED, Simon & Schuster/2012). LOVE the user interface in Sketchbook Pro but the color degradation issue would be a major issue for me.

Fingers crossed,
Debbie

Meeko,
Not sure about the color depth problem. You didn’t mention if you are drawing on the background layer or not. Do you have any problems with the colour on other layers? If not then can I suggest that you just add a new layer and paint on that (see if that works)

I’ll try and explain the extra background layer thing:
In old versions of Photoshop you couldn’t delete or more or rename the background layer. You could draw on it but not get rid of it. In new versions you can. And in order to support backward compatibility (since Sketchbook doesn’t know what version of Photoshop you’ll be using) it’ll will add an extra background layer.

Thanks for the explaination on the background layer.

The color depth decrease seems to happen on all layers. I don’t paint on the background layer.

Just to rule out problems with PaintShopPro (I take it that’s what your using) have you tried opening one of the psd files in another program other than PSP? And see if it looks funny.

It’s caused by SB. When I did testing on a fresh psd I only used SB.

But to answer your question directly, the color depth loss were the same in whatever program I opened it in.

did you get SP1? I think that was one of the listed issues.

I noticed the problem in 5.0 and upgraded to sp1 hoping it would fix it. (It didn’t.)

I’ve been having the same problem as well. Tested it on SB 2011 5.0 and sp1 5.1. Gradients seem to be more and more degraded as you save. Only happens to PSD files. Also, tested on SB Designer, no degradation.

Just to echo others; I too had this problem when saving as PSDs.  This was back when I was using SBP2010, but because the problem was so bad I haven’t tried it with SBP2011 for fear of it happening again.  I attached an example image I dug up.  You can see the marbling effect in the background, which is the result of the quality loss.  You can see a little in the face too, but this isn’t even the worst of it.

And just for clarification, this is all in Sketchbook Pro.  This is not the result of going back and fourth between other programs.
