Okay, so for everyone having issues with the brushes vanishing from their sketchbook, try this:
1. Make tool bar visible in prefs
2. Reset brushes to defaults
3. Check to make sure the brushes have come back in the tool selector
4. If you prefer to work without the tool bar, as I do, you can go back and hide it.
This worked for me, and I hope it does for everyone else. This way you can avoid the delete and reinstall step that others have posted.
