Are they necessary to install? Or are they automatically installed with the main installer?

I ran the Service monitor all seems to have been updated automatically (from 2012 SP3 to 2012 SAP2 SP3) by just running the main installer.

Everything you need is installed with the main installer.  The optional utilities are available because you do get 1 extra gateway license, that you can use with another Mac. Also backburner can be used on a seperate system to procees/manage background tasks.
