What will happen with the beta version of Smoke now that the official version was released? It will automatically disabled? I need to archive all my projects and download the trial version right now?

Another question. What has changed from PR6 to final version? There were only bug fixes?

Only bug fixes and stabilization from PRE6 to Release. You should have through Dec 31. before the Pre-release expires and times-out.  After that, you should still be able to download the actual 30day-retail trial.

Do i need to uninstall PR6 to install the Trial Full Version? I’ve already archive the projects.

In terms of stability ir should be OK for production I guess. PR6 was still not reliable. Any surprises? 3D tracking?

Last I checked… 2102 still opens and runs. So it’s just a matter of which workflow you would like.  Also, didn’t 2012 just get a Service Pack Release a few days ago?

But yes.. the world keep turning.

I am guessing that you will get a email if you are on subscription about the Release with more information.

Hi.

@Raphael: Note that the release version will NOT see users and projects you’ve created in PR6 in the start-up menu. You’ll have to either archive your projects in PR6 and then restore in the release, or create new projects in the release and then go into MediaHub, open the PR6 projects and wire over the media and sequences. You will also have to create a new user in the release version.

@Julio: Smoke should be available on the Subscription Center shortly, we’re working on it. At that time, all subscription users will receive an e-mail announcing that they can log in to download the software update and retrieve their serial number. You can of course also download the software from the trial page if you wish, but you’ll have to run it as a trial until you obtain your serial number.

Regards,
Robert.

Thanks for new release of 2013. I’ve been waiting so long and I want start to use 2013 as soon as possible.

Im already get my 2013 software through subscription centre download.
My question is how to get the serial number and licensing for the new software.

anyone can post step by step installing the 2013 software without delete the old 2012 software.
because I have so many un-finish project on 2012 software.

Thanks

One last question: can I have both versions on the same machine? 2012 and 2013.

Is it advised to install the 2012 SAP2 Service Pack 4(?) that came out a week ago.  It is recommended to be running that version on the Linux side.

Hi Robert,
So are you saying that you can safely install 2013 on the same system drive as 2012?  As you know there were many issues with this before.  These backburner and flexLM issues have now been resolved?  Please advise.
Thanks!

Is Smoke 2013 going to be available as an academic / student version? If so, will it run as a full version like the trail version, or will there be limitations?

Hi all.

Let me try to answer all questions in a single reply:

@steff: Yes, Burn and other stand-alone background services such as Backburner, Wiretap Gateway are included in a separate DMG image called “Optional Utilities”. This only applies to the purchased version. The trial and student builds do not include the optional utilities DMG.

@Brian M: I was just told that any version of 2012 should coexist well with 2013. You don’t need to upgrade to SAP2 SP4. The only issue is the AJA card. Versions older than 2012 SAP2 SP3 use an older AJA driver that is not compatible with the driver version required for 2013.

@Brian B: I’ll look into this, but I haven’t heard of any FlexLM issues with the additional utilities.

@Douglas: The student version is now available on the student portal at https://students.autodesk.com. It’s a 36-month license with the same features as the commercial release.

Best regards,
Robert

Thanks Robert,
The flexLM issue I was referring to was really more about the ADLM license server not being responding correctly.  I still gets lots of startup errors unless my network settings are correctly set.  This wasn’t so critical before I installed 2013 PR1.

Also, I’m still on 10.6.7.  Is 10.6.8 officially supported for SMAC 2012 and 2013?  Please advise.

Thanks again!

Thank you Robert,
I don’t see the price difference between “stand alone” and “network” (Burn and network rendering are included just in the network release, isn’t it?). Second question: the 20% off is available only in the AD store or to the resellers also? Thank you, Steff

hmm. does the release version actually work? PR6 was very unstable and never worked properly with R3Ds for 4K debayering. Besides the crashes, also debayering was extremely slow compared to other packages.

I’m not sure we are willing to make the jump. I was expected a working pre-release version first.

With Pre6 I’ve finished a 45min. documentary with 100+ CFX and AAF roundtripping to pro-tools, 1 TVC, and a row of animations, all with NO glitches. So far Smoke 2013 is a very capapable tool and surely good “enough” for a release.  If your were an Alexa user you would be a happy camper.

Yes, the implementation of R3Ds debayering is not good enough for an entire RAW Red workflow inside Smoke, yet good enough for a R3D import here and then when something needs to b repaired.

Personally I would love to see this fixed as quickly as possible. But as a reduser from the very beginning I can tell you that working off R3D raw files is not a clever idea. The debayering always eats quite a lot of CPU power that is elsewhere needed for frictionless work in any application. From this point of view it makes a lot of sense to convert the raw files to RGB somewhere in the chain. Creative editing can be done off half or 1/4 quarter debayered proxy raw files, finishing not. It would be great to perform all this inside Smoke. I haven’t tried it yet but I believe that all this works when a Redrocket card is installed.

If you want to use Smoke for creative editing off Red R3Ds you are right, the system is not a working version in this regard. And yes, the technical resources are there for RT editing off half debayerd 4KHD files in 1080p without a Redrocket card. I’m sure AD will fix this in one of the next releases. Seems that Red will stay a little longer and others like Sony jumped already on the compressed-RAW wagon. AD is aware of this development.

Thanks. Can you let us know where there is an update for Smoke that can work more effectively with R3D?
Even with HD, the debayering is just so much slower in Smoke (10-20x???) than with Red Cine-X and/or Adobe Premiere/AE. Are these other packages maybe using OpenGL/Shaders to accelerate R3d? Also they have more flexible proxies that can be changed on the fly depending on what is needed vs. being stuck with a single resolution proxy for a timeline/project in Smoke.

It just makes the whole process really inefficient and we want to finish R3D end-2-end vs. introducing new conversion steps. So while Smoke could be great (CFX+timeline is great), this stuff/slowness just kills the benefits/speed to finish in a single package. Plus, Smoke often times ends up in us not being able to export projects at all any more because something breaks… In PR6, we still haven’t be able to complete a full export of our projects, even after weeks of exchanges with support…

There’s a few features we would love to see as well: embedded voice-over recorder, razor tool, and more advanced: particle system, 3d tracker/projection… Those I think are the main things, and available elsewhere. It would be great to be able to leverage Smoke and the integrated system, but without loosing out on those features (some advanced, some very basic/but needed for our work)…

Hi Brian.

We have never certified 10.6.8 because it brings no improvements over 10.6.7 and on top of that it breaks NVIDIA Quadro 4000 compatibility.
You can stay on 10.6.7 or jump to 10.7.x (if you don’t have a Quadro 4000) or 10.8 (which fixes the Quadro 4000 issues).

regards,
Robert.

Thanks for the feedback Robert.  I’m using a 4800 card, so maybe it is time to jump to 10.8 and then try installing 2013 as well (on the same system drive as 2012).
Sound like a good plan?
Regards,
Brian
