Didn’t everyone abandon FCP because it was a closed, be-all, end-all solution that didn’t support EDLs?

Smoke is not a closed system… it supports EDL.  The pre releases don’t feature any xml, aaf or even the old publish workflow.  How that develops remains to be seen.  Not a fair comparison to FCPX in my opinion.

It’s cool that we are all passionate, and I love a good debate.  I do a lot of promotion and marketing at the station, so if I slip into PR mode from Editor mode sometimes, forgive me. I don’t want anyone to not post here because of me. I am not a voice for Autodesk, I’m just a Smoke editor at a little TV station in Midwest, USA.  I work with this tool every day for 8-9 hours, and I try and push it to the limits.  But I don’t have the WTF!? reaction over some of the decisions.  Maybe because I have evolved with the product on Linux and know just how great CFX (or BFX on Linux) and that workflow really is. And for the type of work I do, Spots, promos, Sizzle Reels, and even short form story-telling… Smoke 2013 works for me.

I will say that the Autodesk Staff seems somewhat quite on this board after Pre1 was released.  Fred? Ken? Marc? and Marc-Andre’ even Philippe?  I know everyone is busy… But maybe a clarification to the design decision of why there is no Action in tools?  Or are you working on an interop xml/aaf output or will Publish be back?

Sounds like a good explanation to me and hopefully Mike will forgive you for such and cease his urge for the cussing!* Yup CFX is fantastic and if I ‘had’ to make the choice I would choose there (CFX).... but there can certainly be “MORE” instead of simply “OR”

Yes from the early days in the public beta of almost constant presence there does seem to be a bit of a silence from ‘the authority’ (to not too opaquely refer to ‘True Blood’, which still has an “Inferno Artist” in the credits). I remember remarking on how ‘fresh’ it was that such activity was then widespread here and there could certainly be some more ‘intervention’ into such conversations, polemics and debates that are happening here. I was most shocked when I saw a reply from Philippe Soeiro in a few early beta posts and thought at the time that you wouldn’t get a reply from one Randy Ubillos re the FCP.

*btw, if you can’t cuss, are you not allowed to ‘cuss-in-code’ or is that out of bounds with no use of “**” in the middle of certain fourish letter words?! Personally I think that cussing can add some atmosphere to an argument and as long as it is not directly in the face of another (i.e. “you utter ******") but instead directed at an object then it’s not exactly like swearing on children’s tv?!

Not to defend… but to explain, there is the private beta forum as well, also Flame is in beta as well as Smoke.
I know that Marc Hamaker is on vacation based on his tweets, and Ken and Marc-Andre’ have been busy gearing up and working IBC.  And Fred has taken some vacation time as well this summer.

As far as cussing. It’s frowned upon, and I don’t know the instance Mike was involved in.  I get your point, but with a global audience, language can be a funny thing.  Best to play it safe. :)

I am hoping that Mike’s (aka ‘Deleted’) dramatic departure and the replacement of his own visage with the ‘Desktop-Action-Avatar’ has a positve outcome on the future of Action as a desktop tool. I’ll miss the guy and seriously hope that he reconsiders his choice. In the last few months he has been an invaluable presence on the web boards. Come AD, help to bring Mike back…
