I load the default character rig, load a biped rig template, apply mocap to rig, tag the bvh file, when I hit apply, Softimage crashes.  I’ve attached the file for feedback.

There’s no attachment.

I’ve used MOTOR with BVH several times. Crashes usually boil down to the tagging.

Not sure why the attachment didn’t stick.  Here it is again.  I believe you are right but I have no idea what I am tagging incorrectly that causes it to crash.  Here is the attachment posted in the original posting again if you could look at it that would sure be nice.

i noticed that it only seems to crash. on win7 you get the half whit screen overlay and it asks to close the program. don’t do that and wait some minutes. for a 400f sequence it takes about 3min but then it’s there…

The scene has two rigs (with no animatino) in it, so I couldn’t test Mocap to Rig with it (I don’t have the mocap).

Here’s your scene, plus a BVH file, plus a tagt template:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12898205/motortest01_1.rar

- Open the scene.
- Select the biped and click MOTOR > MoCap to Rig.
- Under Step 2, select the BVH.
- Under Step 3, click Load and locate the tagt I included.
- The target model should already be Biped.
- Click Apply.
- Extend the timeline to about 500 frames and play back.
- The BipedRig will go for a little jog ;-)

Ok. What is the trick?.  SI is crashing until I downloaded your scene.  Please help.  Should the inicial T pose of the BVH must be completly still at first?

Now I know the trick.

Here you go

1. Create your rig and make it a model.
2. Motor->Tag Rig (If you want to make some tests, use the Biped Rig and load the template in biped.biped.tagt)
3. Select your Model.  Motor -> Mocap to Rig.
4. Select the BVH file.

Now here comes the trick.  You must do this or it will crash.

5. In the step 3 of the PPG Mocap to Rig. “Load or Create Tag Template for your BVH fiel” click create.  It will load your Mocap skeleton.  It needs to be in a perfet T position.  To do this you must rotate the cubes to that position.  Select each joint cube and put it to 0,0,0 rotation. Except the ones for the arms.  The right shoulder or arm joint should be rotated to 0,0,-90 and the left should be rotated to 0,0,90.  This will straight up all the joint of your BVH skeleton.  If you do not do this the whole system will crash when you click the APPLY button.

6. Now continue picking your BVH joints of the template.  Click Apply and Save.
7. Return to the PPG Mocap to Rig.
8. In step 4 of the “Target Model” your Model must be already selected.  If not Pick the model.
9. Click APPLY and there you go!!!!!

Sorry, I don’t crash. I repeated my steps several times, each time in a new XSI.exe session.

Well to this mistery.

After the instructions that I posted yesterday.  I am crashing again :( Now I really don´t know what is happening.

I guess that something is going on with the BVH files.  I am attaching two files.  the Wada01.bvh is ok the other one is crashing.

Both of them look Ok when loading in Motion Builder and both were captured by the same way, the same device.

Try to attach this BVH files and see what happens

I used MoCap to Rig to connect wada01.bvh to the XSI Man.

The BVH skeleton didn’t map all that well (for example, the LCollar, Chest, and RCollar are in the exact same position), so the XSI Man was a little hunched/crunched.
But I’m no mocap expert ;-)

Neither me… he he.  But trying to. Yes Wada01 is the one BVH that I have no problem.  The other one included capture_0.bvh is the one that crashes.

New foundings on this matter.

After doing several hours of experimentation under the scientific method, Finally I can capture and every capture will work.

This are the results.

Four different MOCAPS were made and saved to BVH file format.

Here are the settings for each one.

1. Motion Builder convention.  Writing Positions
2. Motion Builder convention.  Not Writign Positions
3. Poser & Truebones convention.  Writing Positions
4. Poser & Truebones convention.  Not Writing Positions.

This files were generated directly from the Brekel Kinect Solution and saved to the BVH.

All of them start with T pose.  This saves time for repositioning the BVH in Softimage to create the TAG of the Mocap.

Number 1 and 2 crash Softimage.
Number 3 and 4 are good and work very well.

So my conclusions at this moment that I want to share is that the BVH file needs to be in the Poser Truebones format (haven´t done more research on this but this is how it works very good, even changin just the BVH file for a new Mocap and just hitting apply transfers the whole animation with no crashes).  If it is in the Motion Builder convention it will crash at least in this tests.

Down is the link to a capture of this succesful test.  I am attaching the template for the BVH files and the two good ones.  No crashes.

Seems to me that the interface will be better if you can choose from different formats or it distinguishes them automatically by the bone name convention.

By the way the T shirt in the capture is Syflex Cloth ICE!!!! it works as a charm and the setup is easy and amazing.  Excellent on this one!!!!!!

Here is the BVH file that I am trying to use. It is from an Optitrack mocap system and am not sure what format the BVH is in. Since it crashes Softimage I think it might be the Motionbuilder format.  Any ideas what is in this format that causes Softimage/MOTOR to crash?
