Hello!
I’ve stumbled across a strange bug in the transform coord. manager:
What I was trying to achieve was to align an object to a face on another object. There’s a dedicated function for this in 3ds max, which I missed in SI until I read ghonma’s hint:
http://www.xsibase.com/forum/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=36108
Trick is:
Pick the polygon reference, and set the rotation of the object you want to align to 0,0,0 in REF mode, then snap-translate it into place.
Problem is, when using the Rotate Tool with REF active, the rotation input fields cannot be edited correctly. If you enter a value, the fields do not show what you just entered but some seemingly random other value.
But when using the Translate Tool, the rotation input fields work as expected, and you can 0,0,0 correctly.
This does not make any sense, does it? Looks like a bug to me.
Best regards,
Eugen

You don’t need to snap into place, you can also type in 0,0,0 for the translation too.
I only tested this in 7.01, and to me it seems that this is independant of the currently active tool. It makes no difference whether the translate or rotate tool is active, sometimes entering transform values for the object just snaps the object back to world origin (world 0,0,0,), not 0,0,0 relative to the reference objects coord (in your example the reference polygon) as it should and does normally. Looks like a bug to me.

I’ve never encountered this before. I just double-checked in 7.01 and 7.5 and everything seems to be working correctly.
Does it happen all the time for you, or just once in a while?

Checked both 7.01 and 7.5.
When in REF mode, I can only enter values for Rotate when the Translate Tool is active, not when the Rotate Tool is active.
Has this to do with Euler/Quaternion settings?
I cannot use Animation/Convert Euler to Quaternion, since there are no keys set. If I look into an Explorer, The Global and Local Ori property of the cylinder is set to Euler.
But then, I should not be able to enter rot. values with Transform Tool active either.

It used to work reliably for me too but then I opened one of Gene’s scenes and it stopped working. Now, even when I restart Softimage it won’t work.

This has never worked for me, always wondered what the cause is

ace63, did you try to switch to the Transform Tool before entering rotation values (0,0,0)?
In REF mode, of course.

Yes I did that, it just keeps jumping back to the values that were there before whenever I enter something

Allright, a bug for sure.
I’m on Vista 64 here.

I know this is a necropost, but I was searching around and didn’t really find a lot of topics on this, so…
The reason you can’t zero it out is because you probably have COG turned on. Turn off COG from the MCP, and it should allow you to now zero out rotations.
