I’m having problems, whereas render region works but when I render out a preview or a pass Softimage, crashes.  I hope I don’t have to install an earlier version of Softimage to get this scene to render.

What are the specific render settings that cause the crash?

The render region has its own render settings. Try copying them to the pass.
