I’ve seen a few of these popping up recently, and I’ve even found one myself.  As someone going from 4.2 to 7, from what I gather this is something new to version 7.  Is that correct, or has this kind of thing been an issue before now?  And, if so, are there workarounds to these kinds of errors, or is this a case of relying on Soft to find the root of the problem?

Hi r10k, can you post up more information about the specific mental ray problems you are having?

Thanks i3D_Jack.  The issue I had has been submitted- a simple crash when using Final gathering and switching the render region preview from rgb to ambient occlusion (which was repeatable).  I had one before that which I didn’t manage to repeat, though.  Mostly though I’ve noticed there have been a few people reporting Mental Ray crashes… such as over at XsiBase.

http://www.xsibase.com/forum/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=37572

As Manny from 3dmastermind.com mentioned, XSI7 seems to have Mental Ray a bit more disconnected that previous versions, meaning when Mental Ray crashes it doesn’t take the whole app down with it… so I wonder if that’s why a few have been popping up.

Any thoughts from a rendering expert such as yourself? ;)

Overall mr 3.6 has been pretty solid. However if I did have to point out anything, it would have to be this error:

[FONT=arial][SIZE=2]Error : mental ray has encountered a fatal error condition.
It has been disabled for the rest of this XSI session.

This is one that started showing itself since XSI 6, as far as I know. Unfortunately, it still pops up from time to time in XSI 7. In all honesty though, this error seems to occur much less in XSI 7- which is fantastic.
Soft did a great job with the mr integration in XSI 7 with all the new features.

Yes, that’s the culprit.  Good to know where/when it started.  Hopefully the issue(s) can be sorted out so it no longer raises its ugly head.
