The righthand menus are suddently missing the bottom part, removing several buttons. I have tried re-installing XSI but to no avail. HELP!

Is this with a default layout, or a custom layout?
Try [temporarily] renaming your User folder
For example, rename
C:\Users\blairs\Autodesk\Softimage_2012_SP1
to
C:\Users\blairs\Autodesk\Softimage_2012_SP1.bak
Do you still have the problem?

I think it’s because you switched your windows to using “Large Font” or you switched the DPI setting in Vista.
sucks, but it’s a limitation of Softimage. If you’re using Windows 7, in Control Panel->Apearance and Personalization->Make text and other items larger or smaller, set Smaller (100%) Default
