i’ve been playing with this for hours now and i’m not making any progress anymore.
how would i run a result of an ice particle emitter through ultimapper to generate textures.
i did get it to work once.
to explain what i’m doing. i’m raining rock models into a container then using a simple quad to render the piles of rocks.
the issue is while i can set the high res source as point cloud, it doesn’t see the instanced geometry. on one occasion it did work but the settings weren’t set high enough to make anything useful. so it can be done.
so i guess the easiest question to answer is how do i set my instanced geometry to be a real piece of geometry and not a collection of nulls.

i don’t believe i should need a plugin to achieve something rendermap can do and ultimapper can’t.
rendermaps results are lacking though. that plugin is making geometry from particles i already have geometry i just want it seen that way by xsi. like i said i got it to render once so somehow it is possible. the particles are just instancing models.
i’d rather do things with the tools included rather than load up xsi with user made plugins.

look at this post

... The “Set Instance Geometry” sets this attribute implicitly, so use the “Instance Shape” node directly instead.

well ultimapper still seems to be missing the point of what i’m trying to achieve.
but mental ray gets me

I have to hand it to ya, you do have a point! Yet, it is usually up to the user to decide whether if a third party non-commercial plug-in could be used in production after putting it thru exhaustive testing… You may be tied up by a deadline right now, but I suggest giving this plug a little bit of a peek on your own free time. Saved my ass on a couple of projects to be honest with you…
cheers
