hello everyone!

i was just wondering if any of you here can forward me the info to any good learning dvds for ICE?  Sadly Gnomon Workshop barely covers XSI at all. it looks like a pretty incredible tool and I would love to learn it!

Ive been an VFX guy in the video game world for about 7 years now. Ive always been interested in creating rendered FX, but i find most apps are pretty complicated. Since looking into ICE, it got me excited to learn more about it simply because the flow thats used in it is very similar to a lot of the higher end game engine tool sets.

thank you in advance!

I have the i3D Tutorial:Breaking the ICE and it really didn’t teach me nothing that I was hoping to be taught.  What I learned from it probably could have been summed up in :20 minutes rather then the length of the training.  I find the Digital Tutors ICE training the best, the problem I have with it, is not the training but Digital Tutors subscription service which makes me throw that path of learning ICE out the window.

As for Thiago Costa, I hear he is good, I dunno, I’m a little skeptical.

AutoDesk needs to release some Training videos, if you go to Netview in Softimage 2010 how the women or robot speaks, is clear and very understandable which is very important.  In the past many who did training videos all had a dialect and it make it hard to understand then if you try to mention that you didn’t understand, some get upset !  What to think in this age when so many communicate via messages and text, why it’s always good to call support regardless what it is, and speak to someone voice to voice it can be much more diplomatic and easier then the net.

I assume you have looked at the training videos available here at the Areas:

here are the links for those interested:

I agree with you, the Digital Tutor subscription business model is not my prefered choice. I was lucky to order the training video before they change to the subscription. That is unfortunate for those who prefer to watch videos offline. I hope Digital Tutor will revisit their decision and provide us with the download or CD purchase alternative again.

The video from Thiago is very good but more advance than the digital tutor video. My recommendation for training would be:

First whatch the training videos that are free here at the Areas. Open the compounds that come with Softimage and see how they done it. Read the Softimage User’s Guide on ICE and follow the tutorials.

Then move to Breaking the ICE from I3D or Introduction to ICE from Digital Tutor, both complement each other. What ever suit your needs and budget.

Then when you are more confortable, The ICE for Production which is more advance and focused to TD, Freelance and VFX production houses.

Cheers!

Dan

i think my problem was that i was associating ICE with just particles. after playing with it for the past few weeks, im learning that its a whole special effects package and not just a fancy particle editor. the size of this beast is crazy!

its too bad that only now they will be adding a dynamic fluids module to XSI. i played with the current fluid system and it is far from good.  but then again, chances are that im not using it right.

i started looking at the ones in The Area. they are definitely cool and very helpful.

Those books though, where did you find those? i looked on amazon and didnt find anything that looked even remotely interesting. is that right off the autodesk product page?

thank you very much for the posts folks!

My Mistake ... by book i mean the Softimage User Guides that come with the program but also available on the Softimage WIKI page available here:

and further information here

That is a nice list you posted, Daniel. :)

I was wondering, book ?, there is an ICE Book ? :) Then you corrected your post.  We could only imagine, a book, on ICE :)

ICE is powerful, as mentioned, I’m also currently limited to particle effects and only to a degree with ICE. When I need some custom ICE effect, I’m left with doing it a longer method, rather then creating a custom ICE compound to do it more efficiently. :( It stinks to be in this club :(
