Depth Pass with new Particle Volume shader

Can someone please help me with a depth pass for the new particle volume shader.

I select Distance under the particle cloud shader and choose a buffer where I want this to render to, but it comes out pure white regardless of the distance settings I put in. The documentation gives one liners on this, unless i am missing something.

Any ideas?
