How to get smooth cigarette smoke?

Hi there,

I was wondering how I can achieve a very smooth and fluid smoke shading like the cigarette smoke I found in the XSI manual (see attachment).

I tried to recreate that image with the Particle_Modifiers_Cigarette_Smoke.scn from the sample files folder. But the particle cloud always looked blobby/grainy instead of smooth and fluid.

What particle shading type is best for this kind of effect? If the Particle Volume Cloud shader is the way to go, which parameters should I play with? Is it at all possible to make particles look smooth and fluid by using a volume shader in XSI? Or is it just a matter of the particles’ quantity?

I am a bit stuck here ...

Here’s a simple smoke shader tree which works OK without too horrendous render times.

I added a slight Quartic Blur in the FXTree to smooth things out. The end result is here:
