Is there a reliable source of preset materials for XSI anywhere on the web?

Thanks for the links.  The quantity is pretty limited and the shaders themselves seem very specific.  I guess what I was looking for was more basic: a set of presets for metals, glass, concrete, plaster, etc.  that get you in the ballpark and let you customize to your heart’s content.

In XSI 5.x it was available: View > Toolbars > Shader Presets
In XSI 6.x that command is unfortunately gone from this menue.
EDIT: That is wrong!

To get that anyway in SIX you have two options:

If you have two monitors you can switch the Layout:
View > Layouts > Dual Views and Shelfs
On the right screen on top there is the panel material presets

If not you can link this view command to a shortcut:
File > Keyboard Mapping…
If you have not yet, create a New User Key Map
Then choose from the Group: View Shortcuts | Shader Presets and link it to a key
OK.

Maybe this is a kind of a mat library that you are looking for…

Great tip!  Thanks a lot.  I’ll check it out.

(I wonder why they buried it in XSI 6? Hope it’s not a sign of things to come in 7.)

Marcel, in 6.5, the presets aren’t as deeply buried as you described.  They’re under View/Toolbars/Material Presets.

Thanks for pointing me in the general direction.

You are right!
That is really strange: for me it was definitively not here! View > Toolbars
I checked that out on another workstation and it was ok there.
So I cleanded up my user directory from several crash temp files and now it works
correct for me too. Somewhere and -how it was killed from my menu bar.
Sorry for the misinformation.

But you can link it to a shortcut anyway ... haha!

And so, the pupil becomes the teacher! :D

Glad I could be of assistance!
