How do you figure out, the coordinates for each UV tile ?

I came across an image on how to figure it out in Maya UV editor, but I can’t figure it out in Texture Editor in Softimage, Maya has a ruler within it’s UV editor to make it a little easier.  I have placed an X in the Softimage TE as to how to what the UV is, the first grid which is black has a 1-1 UV coordinate.

Do you have a tutorial where I can understand how SI is figuring out the UV coordinate. Why in SI preferences are set to 1-1 that is the right hand corner of the noIcon.pic why isn’t is 0,1 - 1,0

I was searching for tutorials and most of what I found was the basics of UV nothing in XSI nothing in depth to understand, besides what is on the wiki page for UV but I don’t have a strong understanding of mathematical terminology, I’m just learning a programming language :) Hopefully someone has some tutorial that I can understand it deeper. And to figure out what each UV coordinates tile is in the TE.

Edit:
I found one site here the closest to what I’m after but still in a distance as it only explains the coordinates each angle of a square, not what I want.
