ok
i just upgraded to xsi advanced and i wanted to take advantage of the extra rendering you get with advanced, so i have setup one machine “comp01” that has xsi and the licence installed the intereactive licence of xsi will be run on this machine - i have this working correctly

but i want to set up a second master computer for batch rendering with a couple satelite render computers
like in the wiki http://softimage.wiki.avid.com/i...nding_Rendering_Licensing

i installed a full install of xsi on the batch master with the option of getting its licence from the network( “comp01")
if i try to batch render on this machine i get the warning
License warning: feature [XSI Advanced] not available

on the batch machine if i run echoe &#xSP;M_HOST% it returns comp01 . so icant work out what i need to do to get this to work

i just also noticed that i get an error at the start of the batch render machine saying
SPM_WARNING (XSI) :comp01(comp01.BigPond) ("mi-spm"[tcp/7050]) does not respond

it should just be comp01 not comp01.bigpond
bigpond is my internet provider so this seems wrong, how would i fix this

also just a note that the batch rendering does work on the computer with the interactive license “comp01”

any help would be great

There are always some license warnings when you start xsibatch.
Can you show everything that is output when you try to run xsibatch?

Can you start XSI on the second machine?
If not, check the SPM server log on comp01.
Do you see any connection attemps from the second computer?

is there anyway to log what the batchrender is outputting? this is what is in the bat file i am running to try and render a scene.

“echo.
:LOOP
call C:\Softimage\XSI_7.0\Application\binsetenv.bat

call &#xSI;_HOME%\Application\bin\xsibatch.bat -r -scene “M:\Projects\Targeting_Literacy\WebSiteCharacters2_Production\XSI_WebSiteCharacters\Scenes\Characters\IllyInsect\Animation\IllyInsect_Animation_V08.scn” -pass “IllyInsect_Hatching” -verbose prog -skip true
REM GOTO LOOP”

if i try to start the xsi interface on the batchrender machine it comes up with no interactive licence found, this could be because i installed xsi with the network license option

what is the correct option to install the batch render license network or local
thank
arthur

StephenBlair i am thinking of doing an uninstall on the batchrender computer and reinstall xsi, what is the correct options for installing xsi to work as a batchrender.
this is what i have done so far

Interactive license install(comp01)
normal install
with a local server license

Batchrender computer(vmp03)
normal install
with a network server license
then test and add the license server(comp01)

does this seem right?

if everything was working correctly then and i didnt have the interface open on the interactive machine then i should be able to open the interface for xsi on the batch machine?

thanks for your help
Arthur

On vmp03, you should do a Typical Install of XSI, with the Network License Server option.
(do a Custom Install only if you really want to do satellite rendering)

I do not see “vmp03” in the SPM log entries that you sent.
So as far as I know, vmp03 is unable to connect to the license server.

Exit XSI on comp01 and then on vmp03, try this:

- Click Start > All Programs > Softimage Products > SOFTIMAGE XSI 7.0 > Command Prompt.
- In the command prompt, run this command:

set SPM_HOST=comp01
xsi

- If XSI cannot get a license, then use the IP address of comp01 as the value of SPM_HOST.

- If that doesn’t work, then check that you can connect to the license server:

telnet comp01 7050
-or-
telnet <ip_address_of_comp01> 7050

NOTE On Vista, telnet is not installed by default.

- Check the services files on both computers (C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\services)
At the bottom of the file you should see

mi-spm 7050

thanks to your help StephenBlair it was a firewall blocking that port number, it is working now both the batch and the interactive license.

just another question how many cpus can you render with using frame based rendering on the advanced license? i was going to setup satelite rendering but i am getting the error thats in this thread
http://community.softimage.com/showthread.php?p=10975#post10975
so i might give setting up frame base rendering instead of tile base

thanks for your help its very much apreciated
Arthur
...just another question how many cpus can you render with using frame based rendering on the advanced license? ...

from another post ... http://community.softimage.com/showpost.php?p=8476&postcount=16
Official response:

1 License token will render on all CPU/Cores on that system

Example:
An Advance license contains six license tokens
1X Advanced
5X Batch

That means you can render on SIX workstations and use all the CPUs/Cores on those systems

So if they are all dual quad systems you can render on 48 threads with the Advance License (package) And if they were all quad quad systems that would be 96 threads, ect
