I’m trying to get the Softimage Mod Tool 7.5 to work but it always crashes at start up. The Mod Tool splash screen pops up and then the beginnings of a blank interface screen and then it crashes and I’m back to my desktop.

I have XSI 7.0 64-bit successfully working on the same computer but have been having problems getting the ValveSource add-on to work and was hoping the Mod Tool exporter might work. Unfortunately, its created this new problem. Also, I never was able to get the Mod Tool 6 working on this computer.

I’ve tried re-installing several times but I keep getting the same problem. One thing I’ve noticed is that the screen that shows up before it crashes says that it is a 32-bit version and I’m running Vista 64-bit, could this maybe have something to do with the crash?

Does anybody know what might be going on here and/or have any solutions? I’m not really good at figuring this type of stuff out so any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

-Ben

It could be a display driver problem.
Try this simple test to confirm whether or not it is a display driver problem.

Thanks for the suggestion Stephen. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to work.

-I changed the “Mod_Layout.xsily” file according to the directions but the Mod Tool still crashed. I noticed that the file was there for Mod Tool 6.01 but was not there for Mod Tool 7.5. Is there supposed to be a “Mod_Layout.xsily” file for 7.5 or is it maybe in a different location?

-I also tried updating the drivers for the NVidia GeForce GTX 260 graphics card I’m using but that didn’t work either. I tried to configure the settings specifically for XSI and I was able to add xsi.bat to the list of 3D programs but I still got the crash.

-Finally, I tried the clean boot and restart XSI solution but the Mod Tools still crashed at startup.

Any other ideas or solutions regarding this problem? Thanks again for your help Stephen.

I installed the ModTool on my 64-bit Vista system, and this is the layout file to edit:
C:\Softimage\Softimage_Mod_Tool_7.5\Application\layouts

Thanks for that file location.

I edited the “default.xsily” file according the directions (changed “View manager” to “explorer” on line 74) but still got the same crash

Hi Ben,

I have been having exactly the same problem, but have managed to fix it:

When I looked in the Vista application event log I noticed that the application was crashing in mcp.dll. After a few googles and finding nothing I decided to clean the registry on my laptop. (I used the registry cleanup tool in McAfee, but any reputable registry cleaner should do the same job). Evrything now works perfectly!

I hope this will solve your problem too.

Interesting suggestion. Unfortunately, after I cleaned the registry I still got the same crashes. The mcp.dll thing is probably worth looking into more. How do you view the Vista application event log?

There is nothing to clean in the registry, please do use these registry cleaners.  There can silently break things in Windows.

After running one these, you can at least repair XSI by running ‘runonce.bat’.

There are no message of interest about XSI in the event viewer.  Follow the instructions given above on the WIKI http://softimage.wiki.softimage.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Startup_Problems , and re-install the software.  It either crashes because the software is incorrectly installed, or a conflict with a finger reader on HP, or problem with the display driver, or the firewall is blocking the application.

Thanks for the info regarding the registry cleaners.

My current situation is that Softimage XSI 7 64-bit works fine but the ValveSource addon does not work correctly with the 64 bit version.

In order to use the ValveSource addon I’ve tried to install and run XSI 7 32-bit version, XSI Mod Tool 7.5, and XSI 6 Mod Tool but all of them crash at startup. They get through the splash screen and into a blank XSI interface screen and then crash.

Do you have any suggestions to get the 32 bit version of XSI 7 working (or the Mod Tools) given the fact that XSI 7 64-bit starts up and runs fine?

Thanks in advance.

Did you try all the troubleshooting steps on the wiki, including removing quicktime?

I have tried most of those troubleshooting steps. I did the runonce and looked at the log and didn’t see any errors. I tried editing the Default.xsily file according to the directions. I updated my display drivers. I tried re-naming the User folder.

The only thing I didn’t try was removing Quicktime. I kind of figured that if XSI 7 64-bit was working with Quicktime installed than that wouldn’t be the problem. Do you think its possible that Quicktime would allow one version of XSI to work and not another? I like Quicktime and don’t really want to uninstall it (though I will if it means I’ll be able to get XSI working).

Any other ideas or suggestions? I really appreciate the help.

I’m having this issue as well except I’m on 32bit windows xp working with the 32 bit program but I get the same error message. Also at the bottom it says :

Error Checking for Updates : CheckForAddOnUpdates failed : -system error 2146697204

I tried everything including going so far as uninstalling quicktime and shutting down zone alarm, clean booting, trying runonce.bat...EVERYTHING. I can’t get this to work and I need it for a class. My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT using driver 178.24. About to try upgrading it to 190.62

This is really irritating.

Well the 190.62 graphics driver didn’t help..surprise surprise… I’m in the process of clearing out one of my hard drives so I can format it with its OWN fresh copy of nothing but windows and softimage. If this doesn’t work I don’t know what will. A new graphics card? ARghhh
