I am just getting deeper into Syflex in XSI and after watching the DT Syflex for Maya kit am getting the impression that the version in XSI does not have all the features as the ones available for other packages. Among syHair, wrinkle maps etc a lot of other things available ie in Maya dont seem to be present in XSI.

Perhaps someone has some more insights on this and I am just looking in the wrong places for these things?

Cheers!

its not there, and as much as i dont like to admit it, for cloth just go to maya ncloth… it works so much better and faster, compared to all the time you need to find settings for syflex in xsi. besides the collisions just work in ncloth.

Thanks for the reply, Frank! :)

Looks like I’ll have to reacquaint myself a lot better with nCloth then.

Cheers und Grüße von Berlin nach Dresden!

No you’re not looking in the wrong places. Many features are simply not present in the XSI version - the examples you mention above, as well as ‘Live Mode’ an indispensable tool used in several scene examples in the DT kit.

Thanks for the reply. :)
Any ideas why the XSI version is so downsized? I find that rather disturbing, to say the least.
Cheers!

I asked the same question to Syflex in July 2007 and this is the reply I got from Gerard at the time. I havent’ had time to test Syflex in XSI v7 but apparently a couple new things made the cut this time?
******

There are many functionalities on Maya that still don’t work well, or are not necessary in XSI, so we haven’t ported them in XSI. This is the case for:
1- Live mode:
Quite difficult to use. The same thing can be done by playing the animation and saving the current state
2- Info command
In fact, doesn’t return very important information. Except the total mass, but you can easily compute it.
6- Magnet force
This is not useful anymore, can be replaced by either soft pins or skin
7- Hair
Doesn’t work well for the moment. Needs more research.
8- Self-envelope
Yes, this is self collide. The goal was to make it more flexible in XSI, by allowing to have more than one self collision force
For instance: to have different parameters on different areas of the cloth
9- Self Damp
This has been removed, it was a mistake. Not used anymore.
11- Reusing nodes (gravity):
This comes naturally in Maya, but it is very risky, and we recommend not to use it.
Only safe to use for a limited number of forces like gravity and damp.
12- Stress:
Not really useful, we need to give a better stress info.

Now, there are a few things that will appear in the XSI version soon:
4- Wrinkle map (although it doesn’t work very well in Maya, we need to improve this)
10- Self Friction
And edges on collisions

And finally, there are functionalities that we don’t like, because they are not implemented in a good way, like attenuation. We need to find a good way to add something equivalent in XSI.

Sometimes it happens in the other way: we developed the zipper force in XSI, and we need now to find a way to implement it in Maya (a bit less easy).

This is why it is always difficult to compare both versions. I don’t think that the Maya version would really give you more. We try to keep them at the same level.

thank you Gerard for the info, its always bugged me that the Syflex xsi version seemed to be missing features that Maya had. it was more ‘the grass is always greener’ syndrome than anything else. its is good to hear the reasons why - simply that they are not good enough or relevant makes me feel better :)

looking forward to the wrinkle map addition

cheers

Thanks for posting that Marc-Andre, I find Gerard’s response rather reassuring!

Cheers and thanks again. :)

There’s a new Mimic force (or constraint?).
