Hi

What is the workflow for importing .3ds files if you don’t own 3DSMax? I’ve a catalogue of models I’d like to use. Previous versions of XSI used to do this via a plug-in but I can’t find reference for it anywhere.

It depends on the version of XSI. The 32bit version have a .3ds importer, the 64bit versions don’t.

This add-in gives SolidWorks the ability to import geometric data from 3DS files. 3DS Import for SolidWorks reads polygon mesh data stored in 3DS files and imports it into SolidWorks. A polygon mesh in a 3DS file is comprised of a set of triangular faces. 3DS Import for SolidWorks creates trimmed planar surfaces for each triangle and knits them together to create a body.

32-bit versions of XSI 7.0 and earlier have the .3ds importer.
