If hardware isn’t the problem, I would definitively go for the 64 bit OS and stack the PCs with a fair amount of RAM. Which flavour of OS to choose from is trickier, although I probably wouldn’t go for XP anymore, the main reason being the lifespan of the OS as an officially supported product by Softimage…

Definately go 64bit OS! Big benefit is you can install more than 4gig of ram. When running 32bit OS, it can only see 4gig. Your apps in 32bit can only use 2 (or 3 with hack) gig of ram.
With 64, your 32bit apps can use up to 4gig, and 64bit apps can utilize even more. There’s no programs that I use that give me problems with Vista 64.
Windows 7 is supposed to come out in Oct. But I guess you can’t wait…

Use Vista 64 or Windows 7 64. Windows XP 64 is not officially supported and has some issues. Not to mention XP is just a crap OS.
We have used Vista 64 as out primary Operating system at our studio since getting out MacPros Last year. I have been using Windows 7 x64 as my primary OS on my laptop since January. As of last month we upgraded all of our workstations to Windows 7 x64. “we all have msdn subs, so we got it already” I have to say out of all the OSs that I have used over the years Windows 7 x64 is the fastest and most stable. “not to mention beautiful” one I have ever used. I think if you buy a OEM copy of Vista 64 From NewEgg.com you can get a free windows 7 upgrade coupon.

I would go with Ultimate x64
